    1. But where will I get an overly expensive electric van with oddly short range?

    2. That’s because, like the Phaeton from a couple decades back, this too was not built as a „peoples car“ it was built to be a status symbol. But for those with money, they’re at the Porsche, Audi, Lexus or BMW dealer instead.

Plus it has terrible range for the price.

Had this been a PHEV or an EREV and the price was about $15,000 lower, it would have been a sales hit for sure.

Prime example of Volkswagen being stupid, misunderstanding the US market, and fucking up what could have been a great product.

    4. These are gonna be super popular once you can get them used for half the original price

    5. Everyone saying the range is low. I don’t know what the range is, but I’d think that someone interested in a VW van is also going to want to roam around a good bit.

    6. It’s too insanely expensive for what it is. All EV in the USA are too insanely expensive. It’s only made worse by the catastrophically bad depreciation EV curve which is way worse than any internal combustion car.

I remember seeing stories about the dealer markups on these. Was kinda funny, seeing 15-20k dealer markups after the CEO pretty much begged dealers not to.

    8. Look, I’ll be honest and say idk what the cost is to manufacture and what their breakeven price is….but it was too expensive for what you get. Really just boils down to that. I am sure my wife and I are not the only ones who would have been looking at one if it made any financial sense.

    9. Meanwhile, it has become the most popular van for craftsmen of all trades here in Copenhagen. They are literally everywhere.

Too many manufacturers saw the Covid car prices and took that as a sign that they only needed to bring the most expensive models to market.

This will only increase it’s collectibility in the near future no?

    12. Competitive_Cry2091 on

Of course they didn’t state: now that there is the Kia PV5, the same car but technically better and much cheaper no one will buy the ID buzz anymore

    13. It’s still being sold. The article just says there will be no 2026 model because they still have a lot of 2025 inventory to get rid off. They will re-evaluate for 2027, and cite problems with getting a pricing triple-whammy of premium up-charge, loss of EV subsidy, and tariffs.

    14. VW has had a terrible track record with vans in the united states. With things like the Routan. Which was just a rebadged Dodge Grand Caravan / Chrysler Town & Country, which in turn means it inherited all the shitty parts of FCA/Stellantis Vehicles. I feel like this van could have been really cool had it been priced lower and been a hybrid instead of full electric. They’re missing out on an opportunity imo. With Stellantis’s future in the minivan being questionable. There’s a spot they could fill had they played their cards right.

All that’s left would be the Honda Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna. I still see lots of these vans on the road outfitted with mobility set ups for wheelchairs and stuff. I wonder what happens if one day the remaining vans exit the market. I’m not so sure such setups could be done easily with SUVs.

Lol how much did they spend the SNL „Californians“ campaign in the US.

One thing that this article missed is that VW’s Cariad software division has been legendarily bad. Like 7.5 billion in losses over the last three years bad. They’re so awful that Porsche refused to allow Cariad to develop their software in house and instead went with Google. VW is hoping to leverage Rivian’s software division to help them out, but it’s still a total disaster.

Bro it was like 89,000 in Canada, shit so expensive.

Give us something cool looking, thats affordable.

    18. They need to make it a petroleum hybrid that uses gas for longer trips and electricity for short ones. Just enough electricity to take the kids to school or putter around the campsite.

    19. My question is why did they release this overpriced small wagon? They didn’t realize that most people can’t afford a new car that costs $70,000? Whoever green lighted this is incredibly stupid.

    20. That’s fitting because I just saw my first one on the road today. It was black and probably was a dealer parts runner.

What a letdown of a vehicle, VW just keeps getting wider of the mark from what it used to be.

    21. the_actual_boki on

If there ANY VW exec or employees out there reading this…I REALLY wanted one of these, but as others have been saying, its so much worse and SO much more expensive than the competition
      Toyota Sienna – 40-51k
      Honda Odyssey – 41-57k
      Chrysler Pacifica – 44-59k
      Kia Carnival – 36-51k
      VW ID Buzz – 60-71k

You are 20k more expensive than your competition. Its not even close to being a good deal. But what do you get for that 20k premium tag?
Do you get comprable range to the other main stream electric vehicles? NO
Do you get the ludicrously fast electric minivan? NO
Do you get a premium interior with great materials? NO

For fucks sake the inside of that thing compared to my 2017 GTI felt like a base level Polo.

Now Im not a van guy. Im a truck guy so I cross shopped this with my Rivian (72 – 110k) which was more expensive but VASTLY better in every way apart from interior space.

This van 100% has a market. It has the look, the electric drivetrain is a perfect drivetrain for the suburban shuttle vehicle, BUT it either needs to be priced WAY lower, or it needs to meet the ever increasing bar for electric vehicles in performance range and tech.

This is just such a perfect example of how the legacy manufacturers cant fucking build modern cars to save their life.

    22. 300+ miles range is EV table stakes in 2025 in anything but the smallest & cheapest “city car”.. I can’t see how they thought this would be successful.

    23. Love the design. But for the price you would expect far more range.

It’s the iPhone air of evs. If the iPhone air was fat.

    24. You mean a 60k+ electric vehicle that only appeals to boomer nostalgia van that ruins any nostalgia because it looks „kinda future-y“ doesn’t have a market in a a country in economic ruin?

      WOW I AM SO SURPRISED

    25. SiliconGhosted on

Can I just have a manual with an easy 4 cylinder or a suuuper efficient diesel?! I don’t need or want a meh $60k van with a 235 mi range.

    26. This could have been the refresh the world was looking for.

It could have been a 400+ mile hybrid that weighed less, misered fuel, and would be both significantly cheaper and safer due to the lack of a thermal runaway brick lining the bottom of it. It could’ve been slower than a Tuk Tuk, and nobody would have blinked.

But in true German competitive spirit….Benz couldn’t be the only ones shooting themselves in the ass.

    27. AdultContemporaneous on

What really sucks is that even if they brought it back in three years, with better range, at $50k, now we’re all spooked that it’s going to get yanked again. The support matters. One model year is basically a death sentence. RIP all the owners who need software updates after this. You know VW is going to phone it in, all the way til the last date of support on this thing.

    28. turb0_encapsulator on

why do companies like VW and Honda release products that everyone know will fail because they are too expensive and don’t meet consumer expectations? Wouldn’t it make more sense to keep engineering it until it’s a passable product?

I think the Buzz is beautiful and would even have considered buying one if it had decent range.

    29. blackscales18 on

I looked at it and it sucked unfortunately, not ergonomic at all to get into, very high and no running board, no handles to climb into the driver’s seat. Expensive too, we ended up getting a hybrid Pacifica

    30. Separate-Spot-8910 on

If they had just made the Microbus with new specs, they could have something cool.

    31. My dad has been driving his 2003 Specced out (camper table, sunroof, barn doors, etc) eurovan into the ground waiting for a new version to drop for like 15 years.

He was excited for the Buzz to hit the North American market but changed his mind when the pricing leaked. $100k for a van is bonkers!!

The ad for it that shows the girl looking out the weird little portal window at people having actual fun.
