    1. > “No, no it’s not. Don’t fight me!” Culkin recently answered during an interview with Mythical Kitchen. “It’s based around Christmas, but if it were also St. Patrick’s Day, it would still work. But you couldn’t do ‘Home Alone’ on Memorial Day. It doesn’t work that way.”

      > Culkin then quipped: “I’m the godfather of Christmas nowadays. My opinion has some sway in this argument.”

    2. What part of „Now I have a machine gun ho – ho – ho“ does he not get?

    3. Repulsive_Cream_7667 on

If it wasn’t Christmas there would be no party at Nakatomi so he’s factually wrong

    4. Lord_Darksong on

Well… I’ve watched Home Alone exactly once and seen Die Hard and Gremlins a million times.

I’ll be the judge of my own Christmas movies, thank you very much. 🙂

‚Home alone‘ also works if the family goes on a summer vacation to Disney World.

John McClane learns that it’s truly better to give death than to receive it.

    7. StrangerDanger9000 on

By that logic Home Alone isn’t a Christmas movie either because it would still work if it was Thanksgiving

    8. maybeitsskittles on

Maybe I’m not a purist, but if a movie takes place at Christmas, references Christmas several times, and is entirely buoyed by Christmas music and and an original score that uses Christmas song melodies throughout, it feels pretty Christmas-movie-like to me.

I think it’s so weird to dig in against it being a Christmas movie.

…… Yea but it wasn’t on St. Patrick’s day. It was during a Christmas party.

    10. Oh, yeah, there’d be no problem having an office Christmas party for St. Patrick’s Day. Makes total sense, *Macaulay.*

    11. The movie could function if there was a April fools party. Doesn’t need Christmas for the plot to take place.

      He so right

    12. faceintheblue on

That Christmas-heavy soundtrack, Christmas party, and numerous references to Christmas in the dialogue would be pretty out of place on St. Patrick’s Day…

    13. This is equivalent to saying “A Nightmare Before Christmas” is not a Halloween movie.

    14. I remember a tweet that said something like „Die Hard isn’t a Christmas movie because it takes place on Christmas. It’s a Christmas movie because it starts with an unwanted family obligation and spirals into a seemingly unending nightmare that you can’t escape from.“

    15. BethanyForDistrict9 on

Home Alone would also work if it was the family on a summer vacation. It’s a Wonderful Life also doesn’t require it to be Christmas.

I’m here fighting you Mr. McCulkin

    16. ReadyPerception on

He’s right in that it could be made around another event/holiday and it would work. If it had been made with St Patrick’s day at the center of it then it would be a St Patrick’s day move. But it wasn’t. It’s a Christmas movie.

    17. People famously fly across the country to see family on St Patrick’s day?

Companies shut down early St Patrick’s Eve and hold a big party?

    18. fuckinestbest on

I guess the Nakatomi Thanksgiving bash must be a big one „now I’ve got a machine gun. Gobble Gobble Gobble.“ Doesn’t work.

      Christmas movie = Die Hard

    19. Wise_Quality_5083 on

I could make the argument that, with enough modifications, Home Alone is not a Christmas movie either. Heck, I could remake “A Christmas Story” occurring around Easter with very little loss in fidelity. In Cleveland (filming location) you could still stick your tongue to a pole and wears full winter clothing in late March.

      Lmfao

Yeah I bet that St Patrick’s Day party at fucking Nakatomi would warrant John McClane flying all the way across the country to stop Hans Gruber who also decided ST PATRICKS DAY was the best day for a heist of that magnitude

Pretty sure the building would be full of people too unlike Christmas where almost everybody else was gone from the building

Home Alone doesn’t even need to be on a holiday at all lmfao. Home invasions or vacations don’t actually require a holiday.

How do we know that Mac lived a sheltered Hollywood life? He thinks companies have St Paddy’s parties.

    22. ibringstharuckus on

Run DMC doesn’t have a St. Patrick’s Day song and do big corporations have St. Patty’s Day parties on premise?

    23. DrinkAllTheAbsinthe on

Die Hard is a movie about coming home for Christmas, but you can’t because you were a dick to your (ex-)wife – also terrorists.

    24. Look Culkin can be a fantastic person and all that, but he can also be very wrong haha.

    25. I don’t care what side someone is on with the Die Hard Christmas movie debate, but if you say Die Hard isn’t a Christmas movie then neither is Home Alone. Home Alone is just Die Hard for kids.

    26. Winter_Dragonfly_452 on

Well, I knew there had to be something wrong with Macaulay Culkin and we found out what it is. Die Hard is 100% a Christmas movie and I will fight him on it because this is a hill I will die on.

    27. MediocreDisplay7233 on

No way I’m fighting him. He’ll run off and hide and the next minute I’m stepping on a 6 inch nail barefoot because my shoes and socks are now glued to the stairs

    28. Die Hard is most definitely a Christmas movie, otherwise Christmas in Hollis wouldn’t be on the stereo.

    29. subjekt_zer0 on

It wouldn’t work though, by his own metric, the only reason John went to LA was specifically to see his kids and try to patch things up with Holly for Christmas. The heist took place during the end of the year and Christmas time because that’s when all those bond would be there. They chose the Christmas party because the tower was mostly cleared. It literally doesn’t work if it wasn’t for the Christmas aspect.

Also, what kind of psychopathic company has a Christmas Party on Christmas Eve? Company parties are on December 10th or something. Takagi was a terrible CEO.
