Musik macht Kinder nicht schlauer. Vielmehr sind es die klügeren (oder neugierigeren) Kinder, die sich zur Musik hingezogen fühlen

As someone who has never been interested in learning an instrument or anything about music… yeah I suppose that tracks.
Makes sense. In general, people are drawn to things that challenge their minds. Smarter people are going to be drawn to more complicated things.
I wonder if that’s actually supposed to be more like “drawn to music *and will stick with it*”. I imagine less intelligent kids might still be drawn to music and instruments at the same rate, but maybe they are just a lot more prone to give up when it gets hard.
This should be Known by parents who think putting their kids in music class will make them more skilled in general
I really suspect it’s both to some degree and complex. There’s probably a threshold, which if you’re below, you’re not going to be drawn to music or able to learn much. For those who are drawn to it, playing certainly exercises the brain and has been shown to increase math ability. Simply listening to it regularly lowers the risk of cognitive decline. I don’t doubt that smarter people are more drawn to it but I don’t think it does nothing for cognition after how much I’ve read about it. Maybe smarter people are more drawn to it *because* it’s intellectually stimulating.
This reminds me of the study that came out showing that children that grew up with a large amount of books in the home had higher IQs. So obviously you should install an in-home library in all homes to raise the IQs of every child! Same point being made here.
And i think, it’s probably also socioeconomic status. Music education is expensive.
