CUSMA doesn’t expire for many, many years.

What is coming is not a renewal, or an extension.

This is simply the United States breaking it trade promises with extra steps, hoping no one will actually know how the „agreement“ works.

      *the demands so far.
Give a mouse a cookie n all that.

      1. If the yanks want to sell us milk, maybe they cant stop manipulating the market by subsidizing it to the 9s.
      2. Canadians dont wanna drink american alcohol. Why would we buy it? They just want us to pay more by having us abolish our economy of scale by have 1 importer a province. I think ive heard Ontario is the worlds single largest purchaser of alcohol in the world. Theyd have a lot easier time making money if they could deal with 500 individual stores.
      3. Theyd rather we import their electricity rather than use our own? Weird ask. Especially cuz we are importing it.

I can see the alcohol bans being dropped but i think dairy’s a non-starter. And electricity is a nothingburger.

Nafta 2 electic boogaloo will continue or end on the whims of an Alzheimer’s patient. What we do or dont do wont effect that.

When the objective is to get rid of CUSMA you will find the goalposts keep changing no matter the level of appeasement given.

    5. Basically they want dozens of concessions without giving anything up on their side. That’s not negotiations, that’s extortion. If you look at all the other countries that have signed a „deal“, they’ve been terrible for those countries, and I hope our elected officials don’t make those same mistakes. The US needs congressional approval to withdraw from NAFTA, which I don’t believe they can make.

Ultimately, if the US wants to play hardball, we must be prepared to play hardball back. We have to be able to walk away from the table if the deal is not fair.

It was rather concerning to see this fall the claims that we were close to a deal, when by all indications such a „deal“ would have been bad for Canada. I hope next year’s negotiations go better.

Look at the example of what Keir Starmer has done in the UK, and just do the opposite.

    6. Let’s agree to open up for dairy and American beer on the condition that an American flag be prominently displayed on American products, I mean they love putting their flag on everything. I’m guessing outside of Alberta they won’t sell enough to justify the expense of shipping it north. The electricity is a no go.

It doesn’t really matter anyway. If we agree to these demands they will simply add new ones. They want to wreck our economy and are actively promoting western separatism. It’s the old Manifest Destiny idea that never really went away. They either want to puppet us or annex us.

    7. Trump is literally going to be dead in the ground before CUSMA expires. I don’t think there’s any urgency on our end.

      We can wait it out.

Trumps brand is fading and he doesn’t have any political capital or any capital from the world.
