Ich bin in diesem Bereich sehr neu und würde mich daher über ein paar Informationen und Ratschläge freuen. Ich bin britischer Staatsbürger und mache diesen Beitrag nach dem Brexit.
Ich lebe und arbeite seit etwas mehr als einem Jahr in Deutschland und mein Vertrag endet im März 2026.
Ich habe mich auf neue Stellen beworben, damit ich nach Ablauf meines Vertrags hier bleiben kann. Bisher kein Glück, aber ich werde weiter suchen. Ich habe eine E-Mail an die Ausländerbehörde geschickt und gefragt, ob ich nach Vertragsende noch 3 Monate bleiben und nach Arbeit suchen kann. Ich ging davon aus, dass dies mit der 3-Monats-Regel zulässig ist? Solange ich in dieser Zeit nicht arbeite? Stimmt das oder muss ich sofort nach Hause gehen? Vielleicht habe ich meine 3 Monate schon aufgebraucht, ich weiß nicht, wie das zusammenpasst. Wenn das der Fall ist, muss ich diesen Monat versuchen, aus meinem Wohnungsvertrag auszusteigen.
Der AB hat mit dieser Info auf meine Fragen geantwortet. Ich bin etwas verärgert, weil ich wie ein guter Ausländer arbeite und meine Steuern zahle.
Nach meinen Recherchen glaube ich, dass mir nach dem Brexit leider kein Visum für Arbeitssuchende mehr zur Verfügung steht?
Wie auch immer, ich habe es wirklich genossen, mir hier ein Leben aufzubauen, und ich wäre sehr traurig, wenn ich nicht die Chance bekomme, dies weiter zu verfolgen.

You can apply for a Chancenkarte to stay for 12 months after your contract ends
The most important questions are: When does your current contract expire? (You’ve already answered that of course, March 2026) And: when does your current residence permit expire?
The 3 months is for if they retroactively shorten your permit. Eg. if your permit is valid until December 2026, but you get fired in January 2026, they would shorten the duration of your permit.
And this shorthened duration is usually „end of job + 3 months“. But as should be apparent now, this is more for unsudden circumstances, like suddenly getting fired or quitting.
If an end date is known, they would generally not issue it for much longer than this end date anyway.
And if your permit by coincidence happens to expire within the 3 months, then they can’t extend it either. It can only be shortened, not extended.

That’s a big prelude for a simple statement: as soon as your permit expires (either because it expires normally or because they shortened the duration), you’ll need to at least have applied for a new one.
The new permit can be either a new permit for employment if you found a job or a job seeking permit if you have not yet found a job.
Though it’s no longer officially called the „Job Seekers Permit“, instead it is now called „Chancenkarte“ (Opportunity Card)
If your contract was temporary and you’ve got a residence permit for that, I’d assume that it ends in March 2026. In this case they’ll not prolong it for 3 months. You have to apply again before the expiration date. Consider Chancenkarte or new contract if you’d manage to find it. Otherwise you’ll have to leave, BUT it’s ok to stay while considering + you always have 4 weeks to go to the court if rejected, etc. I’d not get rid of apartment for now but only in March if you’ll not figure it out.
