Über 90 % des Ostufers wurden während der Befreiung zerstört, einschließlich aller Kirchen, Moscheen und aller historischen Stätten. Während die Ostküste nur zu etwa 10–15 % zerstört wurde.
Heute hat Mossul seinen Platz als zweitgrößte Stadt des Irak zurückerobert und 90 % seiner Kirchen, Moscheen und einen Großteil seiner historischen Häuser wieder aufgebaut. Mosul eröffnete seinen internationalen Flughafen im Jahr 2025 wieder und die Zerstörung des Grabes des Propheten Jona führte zur Entdeckung eines antiken assyrischen Palastkomplexes darunter. Im Jahr 2025 wurde dort die größte Lamassu-Statue der Welt entdeckt.

The two pictures are almost exactly the same with the exception of vegetation. It is either the first one was taken in winter, and the second one in spring, or people watered their parks and gardens after the war.
They even fixed the black water, nice!

Also that Lamassu statue is incredible. Wild to think it was just under people’s feet like that for thousands of years undiscovered.
I’m not defending the previous regime but it would be more nuanced to add quotes to „liberation“ when a city in almost entirely destroyed albeit the restoration and new discoveries.

Old town seems to bo mostly rubble still? But good to see its getting better. I still remember a documentary showing the initial mine clearing and rooms full of dead bodies in a completely destroyed city
