      WASHINGTON, Dec 16 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday ordered a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela, adding that he now regarded the nation’s rulers as a foreign terrorist organization.

      „For the theft of our Assets, and many other reasons, including Terrorism, Drug Smuggling, and Human Trafficking, the Venezuelan Regime has been designated a FOREIGN TERRORIST ORGANIZATION,“ Trump wrote on Truth Social. „Therefore, today, I am ordering A TOTAL AND COMPLETE BLOCKADE OF ALL SANCTIONED OIL TANKERS going into, and out of, Venezuela.“

      The Venezuelan communications ministry, which handles all press requests for the government, did not immediately reply to a request for comment. Maduro, speaking at an event on Tuesday evening before Trump’s post, said, „Imperialism and the fascist right want to colonize Venezuela to take over its wealth of oil, gas, gold, among other minerals. We have sworn absolutely to defend our homeland and in Venezuela peace will triumph.“

      Trump’s comments came a week after the U.S. seized a sanctioned oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela, the latest step in a pressure campaign on the government of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, who Trump has blamed for drugs entering the U.S.

      Trump’s campaign has included a ramped-up military presence in the region and more than two dozen military strikes on vessels in the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea near Venezuela, which have killed at least 90 people.
      Trump has also said that U.S. land strikes on the South American country will soon start.

      This is bigger news than people know yet. Its a massive escalation and will lead to war.

      This will be a humanitarian disaster. Venezuela is heavily import-dependent, with basically no other industry to speak of. If the oil doesn’t flow, the imports will stop.

      There will be massive shortages of essential goods needed for people to survive.

      This is basically all of Venezuela’s national revenue here. War is all but certain now. It’s basically the equivalent to an entire economic blockade of all goods.

      Now all Maduro can do is surrender or retaliate. Trump is trying to bait a casus belli for war.

      It’s amazing to see how dramatically Reddit’s opinion of Maria Machado shifted over the last year.

      During the Venezuela election where she was barred from running despite being the most popular and her stand in won before the results were changed overnight people were heavily supporting her, and same during the Guyana crisis when Maduro threatened to invade them and she advocated against it.

      Now she’s cheerleading for Trump to invade and people hate her guts. I think the flip was like…the day after the peace prize?

      To be fair, it mentions sanctioned. What vessels are currently subject to sanction? I’d wager all of the vessels chevron books to get its crude out are unaffected atm.

      Trump is blockading oil destined for China.

      China has decided it won’t support Maduro. Why on earth the US would now deliberately seek to affect China, encouraging them to become involved to protect their own economic interests. God knows what the US White House is thinking.

      Maybe Xi will let it slide, deciding that China can replace this oil from elsewhere. But it’s an unnecessary provocation. For example, it must be tempting to park some AWDs in international waters, just as a ‚freeeom.of navigation exercise‘ payback.
