    1. Essence sounds like something from fantasy world

„We’re burning earths essence to gain power“

    2. As someone from an ex British colony, I was shocked to learn just how much of the world calls it Benzene.

Gas is gas, benzene is benzene, and diesel is diesel.

Not sure what else is there to say.

    4. Shouldn’t Switzerland and Belgium be split? Or do French speakers there also say „benzene“

Gasoline comes from a brand name, Benzene is one ingredient in petroleum, essence is just the abbreviation of essence of petroleum because it’s France, arguably Petrol is the closest to what it actually is petroleum.

Andorra is wrong. Should be benzene or a separate category. In catalan it’s called „Benzina“, and benzene is „benzè“.

Edit: „Benzina“ is a mix of Gasoline and Benzene

The southern half of Belgium should be green, and in the north most people use „naft“ (from naphthalene) in daily speech.

Went to a gas station in Sweden before I could speak much Swedish and asked for gas, the card reader was inoperative so I decided to pay inside. I asked for „gas“ and the lady reached to a drawer underneath and got me a laminated book full of different butane and propane tanks that they sell. I had to tell her that it was gasoline that I needed.

    11. In Greece we say both though. Benzene is used for gasoline while petrol is used for petrol (diesel engines).

Cyprus is πεζίνα so that looks wrong. Greeks also use γκάζι in some contexts, maybe Greece should have been stripy yellow and blue.

Benzin is derived from the Latin name for Benzoin resin – benzoe, not benzene, however both words share the etymology.

In Romania is called benzina while benzen is the chemical substance benzene.

    15. No OP, it’s not the same word in all the blue countries.

What you mean is they use their equivalent of the *English* word “benzine”.

For example, venzíni (Greek), bezin (Russian), bensin (Swedish), bensiini (Finnish), benzin (German), benzyna (Polish)…

Edit:: just realized you didn’t even get the English right. It’s benzine not benzene.

Edit:: also what about Bosnian “gorivo”? Doesn’t look like it’s related to the benzine.

Calling gasoline „benzene“ is like calling coffee „caffeine“
