I think without allied troops stationed along borders and critical locations it will just be paper tigers.

  2. Then he is better off holding out until the midterms are over. It is very unlikely this house of representatives would agree to that.

This is sensible in a bad situation. We know Trump can’t be trusted to do what’s right. There should still be a few moderate republicans (Fitzpatrick, Bacon, Womack etc.) willing to cross the aisle and support Ukraine despite the MAGAs clear pro-Russian bias.

The problem of course is that Trump et al. will use any ambiguity in the guarentee to not fulfill their obligation. So if this is the route Zelenskyy is going to take, he has to make sure the language is airtight.

  4. People who believe a ceasefire or lasting peace can be achieved without European or NATO forces securing the Ukraine–Russia border are delusional. At present, there is no other incentive for Russia to stop its conquest of Ukraine.

Don’t allow Russia to dictate terms. They don’t have this right and there’s no need to give it to them.

  6. So Zelensky wants security guarantees AND EU membership as peace conditions. Not sure that’s very optimistic.

Ukraine had guarantees before that weren’t worth the paper they are printed on. Why would more guarantees be any different? Especially with Trump as our president.

Guaranteeing this country’s security against a nuclear power seems high risk low / low reward for us ngl

If the US gives that and China attacks Taiwan while Russia invades Ukraine at the same time, the US will be forced to fight a two-front war.

Better let the EU provide that security guarantee.

    A neat approach.

    Either:

    1. They get a guarantee that actually means something backed by a part of the government that can’t flip-flop quite so easily.

    2. This gets tied up in US politicking and Zelensky can say the holdup on Trump’s grand „Peace Plan“ that was basically written by Russia isn’t because *Ukraine* is unwilling.

    3. Enough time passes, Trump gets bored and decides to do something unpredictable and the whole peace plan gets „forgotten“.

Zelenskyy knows that the EU are cowards who won’t back him so he has to ask the US for this.

I think Zelenskyy knows exactly what he’s doing. He knows who Trump is. He knows what words written on paper are worth.

He’s playing the game the way he must.

The moment Chornobyl containment was attacked there should of been Nato planes in Ukraine. Nuclear radiation is no joke.

Is a US backed guarantee worth anything these days? It’s not like they respected any of their other agreements recently.

An EU backed agreement on the other hand might be worth the paper it’s written on – a smaller army that turns up is worth more than a larger one that doesn’t

Article 5 style security guarantee guarantees war with Russia…. Why? Because that’s what they want.

  16. People who think Trump and the US Congress will approve treaty security guarantees for Ukraine are the delusional ones.

To continue after losing 1.2 million troops is insane and should be treated as such.

Under this Administration, an Article 5 style security guarantee between the US and Ukraine is worth less than the paper it would be written on. The US has actively sought to do Russia’s bidding by undermining Ukraine at every turn. The US is not an honest broker.

  19. They had security guarantees when they handed back thier nukes…. look what that got them

This is brilliant. Involving congress and giving the ball to them will make the delays someone else’s fault. The CIA has assets in congress that will slow things down to keep bleeding Russia.

  21. So what happens if Russia attacks again? What would other countries do to stop them?
