First of all — the victims are innocent and the crimes are abhorrent. And it is exactly what I would expect from Russia’s mercenaries (and even regular military forces).

I must note that since 2022, I have seen far too much Russia-boosterism from Africa and the so-called Global South on the Internet. A lot of it could be Russian information ops, but I have no doubt some of those sentiments are real. These people seem to believe that because the USA or „The West“ once did something, accepting Russian imperialism against its neighbours is fair game, and in particular if countries strive to be part of „The West“ (such as my country since forever), they’re particularly happy seeing those people being punished for that. It’s not like Ukraine ever colonized Africa but there’s always some geopolitical expert from Nigeria celebrating Russia „sticking it to The Man“.

Russia is not the Africans‘ friend and this demonstrates it in gruesome terms.

When your forces are tired of getting killed by the Ukrainians and need a ‚vacation‘. I try not to be racist, but how can I not be towards Russians when Russian soldiers gang raped my grandmother and made my 5 year old father watch in East Germany in the aftermath of WWII?
