How many countries play their national anthem before sporting events? I know the US and apparently Canada. Is this common elsewhere?

I moved to Thailand from the US in the late 90s and was so shocked when it played in the theater and everyone stood up. Definitely got some nasty stares as the king at the time was beloved by the people. His son on the other hand…complete embarrassment.

It’s not everywhere in India, it depends on the state. In Delhi they don’t play the national anthem.

I went to one at a shopping mall in Uruguay that played their national anthem.

Kinda surprised the USA isn’t on the list. They are so fixated on their flag and anthem.

I grew up on a military installation in the US and our national anthem was played before movies. Video and all. This was in the 80s.

Every movie I went to in Jamaica had the national anthem played before it. Which was just one movie, but still

It’s definitely also done in Myanmar

It’s optional to play the national anthem before the start of a movie since 2018 in India.

That’s weird, I’ve never experienced that and I’ve watched many movies in Indian theaters… Is this common in India?

Malaysia does too.

Didn’t India stop (or at least not make compulsory) this practice in 2018?

The US military actually plays the national anthem before movies in the theater. Along with a video that is a weird mix of patriotism and advertising for AAFES.

US military base theaters do as well.
