It is based on a Red Army propaganda poster from 1920 for recruiting volunteer soldiers.

During the time of the Russian Civil War (1917-1922), the newly formed Soviet government was fighting for its survival against foreign armies (UK, France, US, imperial Japan) and the so-called „White Army“, which was a coalition of conservative monarchists and nationalists who wanted Russia to go back to its previous feudal monarchical state. The Red Army needed a lot of volunteer soldiers to have a chance to defeat them. Propaganda posters were a crucial tool in achieving the goal.
