A CS degree is mostly a signaling and access mechanism, not a competence generator.
If someone has intrinsic drive, they’ll converge to building, breaking, and reconstructing systems anyway, degree or not. Those people end up skilled because reality forces correctness. The degree just compresses exposure and opens doors.
If someone lacks that drive, the degree doesn’t save them. They graduate credentialed but fragile.
That’s why you see great engineers both with and without degrees. The causal factor isn’t the diploma, it’s sustained voluntary contact with hard problems. The degree correlates with skill, but it doesn’t produce it.
Experience has been more valuable than degrees in anything technical other than academics since forever, but it doesn’t change the fact that you usually need a way to get the experience in the first place.

Do the majority of employers require degree’s for everything above entry level? Yes.

What she said was true before AI. It’s 100x more true after AI. Candidates very good at acquiring new skills are always more desirable. Candidates who are AI native and efficient in superpowering themselves with AI tools are 100x more desirable.

The problem is, without a degree no human being even gets to see your job application.

The background you gain from degrees has never been more important to using these tools to do something meaningful.
Dozens, if not hundreds of movers-and-shakers have said this for literally decades.
And it’s mostly the truth. College dropouts and simple innovators have shaped the modern world as much- if not more than- their traditionally educated counterparts (although yes she is part of both groups).
Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Disney, Henry Ford, and I think Oracle (Larry Ellison) all were started by people who either never went to or dropped out of college.
