The vast majority of aca subscribers are from low income red states and countries.
Using Johnson as a lightning rod to appear more moderate to their constituents.
when trying to get reelected becomes more important than obeying jabba the hutt and salacious crumb.
One of the things I’ve never understood about the House is how there are things that have majority support in the whole body but since it doesn’t have majority support in the ruling party it just doesn’t get done? The Speaker of the House shouldn’t have the power to just table any bill with them or the majority of their caucus had if there’s a house majority for a bill.
Not that I have any sympathy for Johnson (especially being from his state), but being Speaker has to be the worst job you can have in politics
From a practical perspective: It’s one thing to oppose the ACA, but it’s entirely another thing to not have ANY SUBSTANTIVE ALTERNATIVE PROPOSAL. Millions rely on this system, for beter or worse. If you want it gone, don’t half-azz it. Proactively work and pass an alternative.

Why do we keep giving the insurance companies a pass in these discussions? They are the problem.
Republicans aren’t extending anything. They are using this to give themselves a negotiating upper hand by claiming if dems truly care about healthcare they will take whatever we put forward because the subsidies will be gone already and something will have to be done. Democrats want the extensions so actual talks can be had in regards to fixing the healthcare issues and in the event they don’t come to an agreement at least the subsidies will continue so people don’t suffer now. Basically the republicans are using this topic to strong arm their ideas into being passed whether people like them or not good or bad.

Even if the Republicans pass some ACA subsidy extension, it won’t be until after Dec 15… the deadline to sign up for ACA plans.
So people will choose high deductible shitty plans because they are the cheapest now, and even if the subsidies kick in later, it will be too late to change the plan.
Makes you wonder if this is all a ploy to push people to shitty high deductible plans.
Sorta want the red voters to feel the pain on this one.

The only viable way forward is a single payer system that everyone — including congress and government workers — participate in. That’s why there’s never been anything better than the ACA.
Sure you can still buy something else on top of that,
But having basic healthcare for all that everyone sufferers (congress) or benefits from is the only way.
It doesnt matter, the speaker and the speaker alone decides what goes to the floor for a vote.
GOP members know it won’t pass the senate (they just voted it down), but they know it’s an issue that makes them look really bad, so they want to be on record as „trying“ to vote for it, so they can tell their constituents they tried. Dems won’t give them that lifeline unless the Senate promises to vote for it as well.
The GOP cares about how they look while they screw their voters, the Dems care about actually making healthcare affordable.
If only House Republicans would replace Johnson with a speaker that would bring votes to the floor allowing the House to have a voice instead of just letting Trump do whatever

Does anyone have a link to each of these discharge petitions? It would be interesting to see where each of them are currently at. They need 218 signatures and if it’s actually true that 11 Republicans had signed on to both discharge petitions, then they should both pass pretty easily all things considered, assuming that every Democrat in Congress signs on to both of course.
Thing is, when the ACA was originally passed, the expectation was to BUILD ON and/or MODIFY it. It was a starting off point for future healthcare proposals and Republicans have brought NOTHING to the table. Wtf
