    1. „Government pays $196k penalty to itself“ is a hilarious headline.

Its also hilarious that the fine is happening even though nothing even happened, it’s almost ridiculous. I could see fining a company if their response wasn’t adequate in the event a spill or some other loss of primary containment actually happened but it didn’t. It should be obvious why companies don’t want to build pipelines here anymore, this is on top of a whole bunch of other reasons.

    2. >The $196,000 fine is the largest cumulative penalty of its kind issued by the Canada Energy Regulator.

      Ever. To anyone. In history.

      Meanwhile [Trans Mountain reported a $127M profit in Q3 of 2025 alone](https://www.timescolonist.com/national-business/trans-mountain-poised-for-expansions-as-pipeline-fills-up-11552919#:~:text=00:01:08-,CALGARY%20%E2%80%94%20Pipeline%20operator%20Trans%20Mountain%20Corp.,the%20third%20quarter%20last%20year).

Why bother complying with the law when non-compliance is so cheap?
