It’s worth noting this comes on the heels of the Walloon government reducing animal welfare subsidies by 86%.
I’m sorry but this just isn’t the time. This doesn’t even bring in (much) tourism, the park is not easily reached even with the new train station. It’s an investment for the wealthy, who don’t care about the recession and just want to have fun.
giving subsidies to one of the richest man in Belgium, while raising taxes and cutting back on wages.
well done, politics. this is why we trust you!
Can’t have Markske go broke now, can we? What’s next? Having millionaires pay for their own water parks AND zoo?
Strong shoulders everybody
This is on top of the €15 millions for the new train station

Typical to have such responses in Belgium. Subsidies are given all the time and are a very useful tool to push job creation. But now people don’t want them to be given and then go suprised-picachu-face when companies don’t want to invest in Belgium.
I always feel that the govt is not doing enough to facilitate Pairi Daiza. There should be better public transportation and roads around it. It’s really one of the best zoo’s in the continent, it has good preservation initiatives AND is a good employer in (with all due respect) the middle of nowhere.
But instead of roads and public transportation we’re slapping 11mil on a waterpark?????
Wasn’t there a time when you wanted to expand as a business, you needed money to do so? Now you get money to do so?
What is Belgium/Wallonië getting in return for it?
What exactly is this “economic value”?
Water parks have been closing down left and right for years.
Public pools are being closed and merged with neighboring towns.
Instead of doing a structural fix, we pick this specific one to survive. After having killed its competition.
As long as it create jobs I don’t see a problem, it’s an investment that is making returns.
I want to build a waterpark too, where’s my money?
My god. This country and its grants craze.
Over the next years Pairi daiza will soon reach 4 million visitors/year, I’ve zero doubt these subsidies will pay themselves back.
But the fact that more than 10% of the cost of the waterpark is a subsidy is a bit crazy, I think Wallonia (or Belgium) should get some shares in return for that.
Just putting this out there: Pairi Daiza is not a sanctuary for animals. The naming and branding have carefully been chosen to make it seem like a place where animals are meant to be.
