Why does it have to be gendered? A woman should face the same consequences as a man for violent acts. Liberals sure love their multi tier justice system.
Does anyone *really* think mandatory minimums are a part of the solution when, A: the Supreme Court has ***repeatedly*** struck them down as unconstitutional–isn’t the point of Supreme Court rulings that they, you know, lay down the law–and, B: *the courts don’t have the resources to process all the cases in the first place*.
Mandatory minimums are the kind of thing that only sound good to people who are arrogant enough to assume they’ll never end up on the wrong side of the law, let alone think that the prison system as it stands does people any good. The problem is that mandatory minimums are just punishment for the sake of punishment: even if the person is wholly repentant, there are alternative means of rehabilitation (i.e. training), etc., they’re going in jail.
The real thought process underlying mandatory minimums is that myth about „activist/rogue judges.“ Which is complete and utter nonsense; what about the judges who are too far in the other direction? You say there’s no evidence that’s a problem? I seem to recall something about not throwing stones in glass houses.
The number of people who are going to potentially go to jail for porn of fictional characters from movies is going to be insane.
