It’s no different for older people. It’s shite all round
Civil service recruitment is an option. Garda and defence forces are options. Particularly the latter and the Navy. €38K after training.
5% answers back! Those are amazing numbers. Not a youth and the % answering back is around ~~1-2~~ 1%.
If you are applying for 100 then I highly doubt you’ve put much time in each application. Sorry to be cynical but im guessing alot of these applications are on Indeed or something where it takes 2 minutes to apply.
Nothing shocking here really, yes you need some sort of skill or qualification to get a job as the basic no skill jobs are getting automated.
I run my own business. When we’re hiring, it’s posted in the vacancies section of the website. There is a clear note on the page stating that applications will only be responded to if there is a current vacancy advertised.
Despite that, I still get CVs sent in, portfolios, emails and phone calls on a regular basis, none of which I respond to as I don’t have the time.
I’ve also been on the other side of the fence – job hunting and getting zero responses, so I know what that is like too.
>It used to be you just had to have a Junior Cert but now you need your traditional Leaving Cert. Certainly you need the maths, and a lot of employers are looking for them to already have their full, clean driving licence. Starting off, that’s too much to ask.”
The reason why builders now mainly want their apprentice to have the done the leaving cert is that it proves they can take instructions and do as they are told.
Like if a lad cant follow the rules in school, or do as teachers say, they wont last on a large building site.
Given that companies have to respond to GDPR requests, isn’t there some mechanism that we could or should enforce about company communications?
Why shouldn’t people be told „you haven’t been selected“?
Life is tough for every generation in different ways
In college, final year, get my CV together and then honestly hoping I end up winning the job lottery, otherwise go into construction I guess?

That’s everywhere. Most jobs postings are to make the company look like they’re growing, scrape your data, or to pressure current staff to not look for proper raises.
Honestly the amount of begging you have to do to get a minimum wage job is a fucking joke , Want an opportunity to work at macdonalds? Well, fill out a literal personality test LMAO, write a unique cover letter and tell us how it’s been your dream since you were born to flip burgers, you might get the job , no guarantees after all that …
85% of cv applications I see in my place I just laugh at.
Sure tell us how it’s impossible to get a job, but when you do tell us- show us how you’re trying alongside.
The amount of young lads who cannot spell, string a sentence together, or give any decent information in their CVs is actually comical.
Last one I read had “I’m no hear to take the piss” on his CV. That’s taking the piss already- NEXT
They need to legislate for what employers have to do when someone applies for a job. There’s an EU directive that you have to list the salary now which is good but there needs to be a framework for how many rounds of interviews is allowed and how long you can go before giving someone a decision because some of the carry on I see is ridiculous
I look at CV’s and applications regularly. Not very skilled work but 98% of applications are South Americans or Indians that are massively overqualified
I’m in my 40s with tons of experience and a strong CV and I’ve applied to 250 and got to final interview stages with one and no other call backs… its not just the young being impacted by this.

I was applying for roles in Ireland. Got nothing. Got a role in the England with perks I couldn’t have even dreamed of back home, flew over for the interview and got the job. I did get lucky but the point stands. I applied for hundreds of roles in Ireland and got one second (of 4 stages) interview. Applied for one role in the UK, attended one interview and got the job. The market here isn’t great but it is far and away better than Ireland.
Have a level 8 degree and unemployed. No matter what I do, it never appears to be enough.
You’re competing against immigrants who work for less. Bernie was right on this.
I applied for a retail job in a well-known clothing store between lockdowns. Had a family member that was a manager of a store but I said I’d apply on my own merits.
I had to fill out an online form and then complete a personality/situational problems questionnaire. Instant fail.
Said fuck it and spoke to the family member…they confirmed that barely anyone actually passes the survey and most hires are contacts of existing staff.
Madness.
The job seeking game has changed a lot but also stayed the same. I left school in 2009, shitshow economically, competing against laid off boomers and gen X’ers with heaps of experience, no family connections and no college. The issue back then wasnt loads of applications but nothing back, it was more so fuck all applications because there was fuck all jobs. The end result is the essentially the same, young people always get shafted on the job market.
I work in recruitment now, it’s essentially all LinkedIn. The game is not getting your CV in front of someone anymore, that’s the easiest part. The hard part is making it stand out from the literal hundreds of other practically identical ones. That means (ugh) cover letters supplemented by a message to the the relevant people on LinkedIn. If you’re actively on the hunt pay for a month of LinkedIn premium and see if it gets you any results. Using it correctly means you can message decision making people in the company you’re applying to without connecting. Look for the recruiter, the likely hiring manager for the department you’re applying to and for good measure the head of HR or talent acquisition.
It’s an absolute faff I know but it does yield results. On your CV try to frame your experience (or interests if you’re lacking in experience) to fit the type of job you’re looking for.
Very important too, make use of friend networks, ask any friends you have that are employed if they can do a referral. Ask their parents, ask their patents to ask their friends etc etc. Look at job hunting with a predatory eye, ask questions, ask about average salaries, check out glassdoor for reviews.
And lastly the most important thing if you’ve pretty much no experience under your belt….lie! Lie your fucking arse off until you get a job and then pretend you know what you’re doing until you actually know what you’re doing. Make up a degree if you don’t have one, they almost never check unless it’s directly relevant to the job you’re applying to. Say you worked freelance in a similar job to the one you’re applying to, whatever works just do it, I guarantee almost everyone else you’re competing with is doing the same thing.
I was involved in hiring entry level roles for my old job about a year ago, and I think people trying to blame immigration, or any other factor, don’t understand just how much of an insane mess the hiring industry is now.
If you thought having to send your CV in AND manually input all the same info to a custom webform was bad, you should see the state of it now, because it is utterly deranged.
People are using bots to submit several hundred AI generated CVs at a time to everything, 99% of which is bouncing off some manner of recruiter’s AI filter for reasons the recruiter can’t explain because they don’t know, they’ve left it to the AI to do.
Then a seemingly random handful of (also AI generated) CVs are passed on for a follow up call and quick online screening (ie recruitment agency interview), before there are two more in person (company) interviews. Very often, it becomes apparent at the first company interview that this person was tapped for the role by a recruiter despite being completely, obviously unsuited.
I held 30 interviews for a post a year or two ago, from what we were told had been 2k applications, and not one of those 30 people were what we’d asked for. Not one. The primary reason we failed people out of interviews was that their AI generated CV clearly did not match up with their real communication skills or talent level overall.
And all this takes months, months of calls and meetings with the recruitment agency. You still end up with the company hiring some absolute melons somehow anyway.
There is a vast, vast volume of time and energy being wasted through completely needless layers of AI bullshit, recruitment agency ineptitude (sidenote I do *not* understand how these companies still function given they are almost universally terrible and have the worst turnover I’ve ever seen?!?), absurdly convoluted policies and processes… you could cut out 70% of it and nobody would notice apart from hiring being faster and cheaper.
It’s ridiculous, the whole massively overinflated recruitment sector has turned into a gigantic Rube Goldberg machine. The reason a load of places tend to hire most often by referrals is simply because it’s less of a fucking mess to do it that way, but that doesn’t explain to me why the HR industry is tolerated otherwise.
Use AI! Just fucking throw in the towel and get with the times. I also have decades of experience and a strong CV made with an Apple template so it looks great, but the AI software used to scan your CV before it even hits the recruiter doesn’t give a shit about legibility. And once I ran the CV through Gemini, which spit out a horrible mess that looked more like a spreadsheet, I started getting interview after interview…
Recruiters get hundreds of applications, they need to filter, so adapt or die. I don’t like it any more than you do but this is the world we live in.
It sure would be nice if someone mandated job interviews to give these lads a chance
I’m so burnt out. I can’t go back to bar work and the only people to get back to me never respond after the first phone call. Broke, living with family, feeling hopeless. Never used my degree. Springboard classes didn’t lead to any sort of employment.
As a fellow of nearly 30, I remember trying to get a job after Covid and decided then that if I was to ever take power I would wipe HR from the face of the earth purely because of this shit
This is nothing new. Been like that since the crash
Apply for basic jobs then. And before you downvote this yeah this is not ragebait. A lot of youth thinks they deserve great salaries with 0 experience, work from home cushie jobs. I know this because i have a niece. We talked she told me all about her friends too. I was sent to a factory by my mother the second day I finished school where i worked for nearly a year while looking for another job.
