Not sure why this surprises anyone. The Dalai lama is one of the biggest enemies of china as hes the leader of Tibetan resistance to china’s forced annexarion of the region. So of course america/cia would fund him to cause a headache to china, reduce its potential territory, cause resistance/terrorism, and to hurt its worldwide political influence with scandal. 

 China seriously wants to stamp out Tibetan nationalism and make them all pro CCP/convert them to the han Chinese CCP identity, so of course wed try to thwart that. The way the lama work is the Dalai lama is the leader and choses the panchen, who then has the power to identify and choose the new reincarnation of the dalai lama. They are supposedly two souls reincarnating and identifying each other. 

So when the last panchen lama died, the Dalai lama chose his reincarnation, a 3 year old boy. China tried to circumvent it and vote for the new lama, which Tibetan Buddhists denied. So they abducted the panchan, have been raising, molding and brainwashing him ever since. 

So the idea is once the Dalai lama dies, china will have the new panchen select a CCP stooge in which the new Dalai will be pro CCP and effectively force Tibetan Buddhists to accept Chinese leadership. As a result, the Dalai lama has been stating he wont reincarnated again and instead wants Tibetan Buddhists to establish their own new pro independence leadership system. 

As a result of all this, Tibetan Buddhist nationalists absolutely despise china. And the lama is their pope. Us supporting them is no less suprising than us supporting Taiwan. Of course we are gonna fund china’s worst enemies, so that as china continues to hold Tibet, they will face resistance and terrorism/destabilization/bad press. We also continue to support him as hes in exile in India due to china taking over tibet, so we provide him aid to continue his rhetoric against china in hopes that one day it starts a big enough revolt to destabilize the region. Same with funding India in their conflict against china, as china wants to continue expanding into India and we hope to weaken their power. 

Im actually suprised we havent given him more than $180k. He is effectively a western agent against china. And frankly, I got no issue with it as china is our true mortal enemy, anything that can hurt their influence is good for western values, just as we support taiwan. Doesnt make the lama an angel or anything(especially with that weird kid kissing), but supporting him and the Tibetan resistance is a good thing for us geopolitically. Especially in 1962 as it was only a decade prior china annexed tibet and they faced tons of resistance/terrorism by tibetans in hope of earning their freedom again. 

Its just more cold war shenanigans, but unlike in other countries like north Vietnam that chose to be communist, tibet was largely taken by military force and forcibly annexed into china. We support taiwan till today for much of the same reason, to try preserve a willfully democratic/more western movement to undermine china in hopes that one day they can be installed over the CCP or atleast cause a bunch of issues for them. It has little to do with israel, its just our western client states supporting each other/what america tells them to to continue our support for their movements.

And of course Russia is promoting this as something bad as they want our sphere of influence to lessen in the east, and are much closer allies to china now. To scandalize this is only helping china and is hurting our geopolitical influence over the last hold outs against them in the region, it sucks we gotta do stuff like this, but thats geopolitics and if we stop, china will be the ultimate top dog on the world stage, which regardless of our faults is a much worse outcome. 

Edit: Says a ton about the CCP/Russian bot influence on this sub that this factual geopolitical explanation would be downvoted and that this post is made it such a dishonest way. Very eye opening. As a member here for over a decade, this sub has a ton of truth on it, but research the topics here yourself before blindly believing them, dont just go with what far worse foreign actors want you to believe like the CCP.
