Cost of living crisis, shrinkflation, bills higher than ever, wage stagnation, is anyone surprised?
I bought a twelve quid tin of M&S own brand quality street. My back does ache sometimes, carrying the UK economy on it like this.
It’s interesting how the press keep telling everyone how awful everything is, and how it’s all going to get worse, then act all surprised when people cut back on their unnecessary spending.
Counting cocaine in the official figures is what is stopping the government from confirming that we are in recession

When you have no additional money after bills, it’s easy not to spend what you don’t have
Meanwhile the high street is constantly mobbed and you see loads of people shopping. Not everyone is affected by the cost of living crisis. Sick of the media constantly spreading doom and gloom.
No one told my wife. We’ve spent far more than recent years!
Pretty much everyone I know (myself included) is cutting back on gift spending this year.
I love making people gift hampers, with lots of little bits in that I know they’d love. The price of me doing that has gone up by atleast £10 per person this year compared to last.
I can’t afford that extra cost, so I’m not doing it. This year I’m making a big batch of tomato garlic relish and packaging that up for everyone instead.
Fuck all actual discounts on things that people even want
No spare change due to shit being insanely expensive
No shops having anything of inspiration in shopping centres

I moved house on Halloween and need furniture. I bought a rug and 3 wardrobes and for both the Black Friday offer was increased after I bought them.
Fortunately I got refunded the difference but can see that people might have waited for a better offer, then decided during the wait that they didn’t really want or need the item.
Oh, no! Raising the prices of literally everything has consequences!
There aren’t even many houses with Christmas decorations up compared to previous years in my area. It feels like just a wet, grey few weeks, not 2 weeks to Christmas.
I don’t know what the media wants, I can’t give all of my wages directly to utility company shareholders *and* afford to feed my family too
Thanks to Treasury briefings to the press and Reeves in her breakfast speech near the start of November, many people didn’t know which taxes they were going to be hit by – but expected to be hit. So spending was restrained – no surprise.
The spin from the Govt about how bad things were – when they actually weren’t that bad – may have allowed them another go at ’14 years of the Tories‘, but Labour don’t seem to realise they damage the economy when they go all doom and gloom. But taxes were still raised to spend on things Labour previously said they couldn’t afford.
I’m more surprised at how many people have Christmas lights outside on from 4-12. I thought energy bills were at their highest
Struggle to find a decent gift for less than 20-30 quid. If you have ten people to buy for that quickly adds up to 300 quid. That’s before you consider kids.
With the theatre being £500 before transport and food for a family of 4 I’m not surprised.
The average grotto seems to be £200 for 2 kids or more.
Christmas dinner / festive drinks and chocolates will be getting pricier.
All while wages have stagnated, people are not hopeful for future rises etc.
That being said we were all probably spending too much in the past over the Christmas period. Over doing gifts. The pressure of multiple Christmas parties and drinks.
Having no money will do that to people .
Quick better increase prices to cover the losses .
Economists forgot that capitalism was based on mass scale consumption. If the masses don’t have any money, the entire thing doesn’t work. Money distribution needs to be recalibrated.
Given how the budget completely shafted me in regards to tax on savings (lower cash ISA limit & higher tax on savings outside of an ISA), I’m currently thrusting every single penny into my cash ISA to max it out this financial year. Christmas shopping can go whistle this year as far as I’m concerned as I’m going to be significantly worse off as a result of the changes.
