      I shared a version of this guide earlier this year, but felt a website was needed to unpack the different options fully. So after an unreasonable number of hours, I put together the necessary data and website.

      I hope this is digestible enough for the average person to help those looking to take that first step, or for people who are equally passionate and want to get their friends or family involved.

      Linux and gaming. Tried pop os and none of my games was really working. Also my mouse and keyboard were not supported :/ .. sadly not an option yet

      Why would you move from one of 3 US browsers to another US browser (Firefox), same question for a few others in the list.

      For Linux, I would add OpenSuse Tumbleweed. Also I like the idea behind Zen Browser but I heard it has quite a lot of hiccups, not there yet. At least for Windows

      This is a good guide, the website is a very nice addition. I have multiple questions, suggestions and criticism, but I will also say that I take my hat off to you for actually doing it and committing the time.

      Yet still no alternative for the full Microsoft stack. Someone should really pour money into developing a true competitor.

      Edit: downvotes just prove how many are utterly clueless about *business* requirements.

      I find that pretending that it is a matter of weeks is disingenuous. Some migrations are super long projects. Like immich. You just don’t install the app and go. You need to know how to run this stuff safely so you don’t lose your data. Same for file storage. You might need a NAS, delve into self hosting, understand trade offs, etc…

      On another note Deezer might be originally French but it is not french owners anymore, I believe they’re from the Americas now.

      I’m already mostly there, the biggest hurdles are mobile OS like Android and iOS, web videos (the creators I follow are mostly exclusively on YouTube) and Steam. I have games on gog.com (would be a nice addition to this list btw) but still a huge library that I’ll never get off there except buying all the games elsewhere if they are available at all

      I support using European alternatives but.. aside from Spotify, the difference in quality between the main products and European alternatives is genuinely insulting to even suggest it. Comically enough most viable alternatives are also American (Firefox, DuckDuckGo, Signal).

      There needs to be discussion about domination of Visa and MasterCard in financial systems. Domination of American big tech in the cloud sphere. And their monopoly in software ecosystem. It’s not just about a random browser or something tbh, there are far more critical areas where this needs to start.

      I support European alternatives but many of these are just laughable. Plus, don’t assume because they’re European they’re nice. Cutthroat businesses are not exactly endemic to north America, and we have loooots of examples here

      Operating system…? Ubuntu? First off all it’s a British company (Canonical) not EU and why prefer a company that needs to get revenue over a distro that’s completely maintained by the public and not backed by some million dollar company

      Europe needs more builders. You should use European products because they are the best in their category not purely because of ideological reasons. You need more builders and entrepreneurs for that

      To replace Microsoft Office, I would also advise Collabora Office, based in UK, or ONLYOFFICE, based in Latvia.

      To replace Windows for gaming, I would advise a more popular option, Bazzite, which is a pure community effort (no company).

      Should add Jottacloud to the file storage section. Norwegian company and servers. €6.90/mth for 1TB and a free 5GB account available to try it etc. and works just like Dropbox and all the rest of them.

      Why is Tidal in there, what’s the positive thing about it?

      And where is Telegram in this?

      quite honestly some of these dont make any sense, because theyre software built on core from different country/model. For example pop os really isnt american, but opensource, meaning the organization maintaining and developing it really cant impose any sort of shady practices on the user.

      I think for most people, switching from Windows/Apple to any version of Linux (including Ubuntu) is a non-starter.

      Beyond the fact that no one is offering a Google-like integration of multiple services (Gmail, Youtube, Maps, Drive), what bothers me with switching to EU-based platforms is with ideas such as Chat Control floating around the EU, I’m not sure that I want my data *stocked* in the EU.

      If you want to make it even more infeasible try offering alternatives for YouTube, Apple TV, Disney+, Prime Video, Netflix and HBO.

      Keep in mind big US tech firms employ a lot of Europeans. Will all these European tech firms do the same or outsource to India or China?

      7 of your 15 choices are US companies… several are US hosted. Europe just doesn’t make enough viable software to really do this.

      why would I use EU version that noone else does ? how do I message my friends lol

      I think the funniest thing about such lists is that people just see that a smaller service has a somewhat similar functionality to a much more popular one and think the former can replace the latter on a whim.

      It’s not only about the functionality, it’s also about the scale and whether the backend can handle it. If people actually start moving in droves to most of those obscure services on the right, they’d liverally just overwhelm it.

      You also probably don’t want to look under the hood of those „European services“, as you’ll find out that most of them are reliant on at least one of the big three cloud service providers (AWS/Azure/GCP).
