Why is it that everything we predict is coming true?

It’s been a known issue for years, yet governments keep deploying the tech anyway.

Am I understanding this right? So for white people a chance for a false result is .04% but for black women it’s 9.5%!!!! Holy fuck that difference is crazy. So 1 in 10 chance of a false arrest??!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

‘Tech developed in predominantly white countries works best in predominantly white countries’.
Ok? Not a massive surprise. This sort of tech depends a lot on its training. The UK is more than 80% white. Makes sense that it works more effectively on white people as that’s what it will see the most of. The vast majority of outside London.

Good to see the issue being acknowledged openly. Bias in facial recognition isn’t new, but admitting the gaps is the first step toward fixing them. The real test will be whether the next iteration actually improves accuracy for everyone.

Tldr; Tech is biased for the minorities, leading to false positive and more arrest on these minorities.
Well ICE is using these tech too, so is a lot of other government sectors.

People don’t get arrested because of a facial recognition hit. Facial recognition flags to the police, who then use their own judgement to see if it is really the right person.

The Home Office claims to be taking action, but if they really cared, they would have never used the system in the first place. Privacy concerns excepted, this is the most well known and publicised issue with facial recognition technology.
