Was almost bound to happen. Its amazing how quickly we got to some of the biggest dystopian sci fi tropes

      >Herasight **claims to deliver an average gain of six IQ points** for a couple with five embryos and provides sex, predicted height and risk scores for conditions including heart disease, common cancers, Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia

While IQ is correlated with genetics, there isn’t a single IQ gene and I’m skeptical of how they screen for that.

And since IQ is hereditary, things are not looking good for that kid on that front.

I guess that doesn’t really bother me. I’m pretty pro-choice with respect to terminating a pregnancy, so why shouldn’t a woman have all the information about her potential offspring up front when choosing to start a pregnancy?

    4. I don’t mind screening for potential health issues, or even genes that indicate intellectual disability (assuming there is such a thing), but six IQ points? That’s nothing. It’s pointless.

I don’t know how to feel about this… I get that it’s dystopian & shit, but is there really anything wrong with someone wanting their kids to be healthy, smart, & tall? 🤔

Good, nothing wrong with making better and healthier humans. God knows we need them…if i could give my child better adds of not getting cancer and other horrible conditions i would take it in a heartbeat.

High IQ people does not automatically mean high achievers. High IQ can lead a high potential person who is not challenged enough to become lazy and an underachiever.

Similarly, high IQ people pushed by their parents into a field of study they dislike will often turn to drugs and other ways of coping as they are often unable to confront their parents and tell them the truth.

Another problem with „high potential“ individual is that when they fail at something (like business or love), their whole self-confidence is often shattered and they decide to stop doing things by fear of another failure.

High IQ does not mean rich either, a lot of super smart people are poor, just read about Nikolas Tesla and how, despite being one of the smartest man alive in his days and working for some of the richest industrialists of the era, he lived a precarious life of poverty and misery. Albert Einstein was not really good with money either.

I should know, I was one of those „OMG what a prodigy“ kid and a member of Mensa.

    8. It’s not the first time people selectively chose a few specific traits, ignoring other traits or how they all work together as a system. Just look at pugs. They’re doing great 👍

Predicting IQ? How the hell can they figure that from a damn embryo?

This is a terrifying turn towards a Gataca type future but this feels more like rich couples being taken for a ride.

    10. What they are not telling you (hopefully they are telling the couples this): messing with the embryo to collect the DNA sample also decreases the chance of a successful transfer by a lot.

As an autistic person it is *very* worrying to see everyone being so blasé about what’s essentially eugenics. I have *very* mixed feelings about this.

Of this becomes commonplace it could act as a massive acceleration on human evolution for the classes who can afford it.

    13. More of this, please. Make it standard and globally accessible. A world where everyone is at their best is in everyone’s best interests.
