      This is from 2017. A question from Ask Ireland prompted me to to remember the fear and hate campaign that Varadkar pushed. Too many people believed the propaganda. It was all orchestrated to create shame and embarrassment for job seekers. Also, for people not to challenge the government but for people to blame and report their fellow citizens. Many reports were malicious

      The worst thing about it was the sheer lopsided nature of singling out plebs fiddling the dole, and turning a blind eye to their capitalist bedfellows who are fiddling the tax man on a daily basis to the collective tune of millions & billions.

      Like, how’s about a „dodgy bike shed budgets cheats cheat us all“ poster ? Or maybe one that says „extreme children’s hospital overspend cheats cheat us all“ ?

      Not relevant at the time but you get the idea.

      If you’re going to take a tactic like this, you can’t just single out the unwashed and say nottin‘ about your pals in the golf club. People aren’t stupid.

      It was a disgusting campaign. A little crusade for Leo Varadkar to show his contempt for welfare recipients, and turn neighbors on each other .

      This type of mentality always rears its head during downturns, when unemployment is high. And it’s bollocks, proved by the population swiftly reaching full employment when recovery actually provides opportunities across the board.

      Of course the workers in the department knew better than Varadkars six figure salary advisors who live a life completely insulated from people who are struggling financially

      Only 2.5bn of government spending went on employment supports (the dole / Jobseekers etc) last year. Thats less than we spent on paying victims of the Catholic Church yearly, and not far off what we’re spending on asylum seekers per year.

      The headline DSP figure is always used deliberately misleadingly to shame welfare spending, when the vast majority of the figure goes on sickness and old age supports.

      And only a tiny fraction (estimates are 2%) of that 2.4bn employment support is lost to fraud.

      It was such a pointless campaign, just a waste of government time and money so Leo could channel his inner Thatcher.

      The irony of the government calling people cheats while they waste countless taxpayers‘ money every year . 1.4 million security hut, 350 grand bike shed, 750 grand for a few steps and a rail in a park, half a million for a brick wall, 11 million for land down in Castletown that was sold for 5 million, children’s hospital and billions on Ipas centres to name just a few….

      Blueshirts are going to blueshirt when given the chance. It’s not a coincidence that they’ll immediately jump on the exact same rhetoric you expect to see from the same ideology following political parties elsewhere when push comes to shove. Neoliberals love a little propaganda to turn people against the less well off than them and the poor.

      It looks exactly like the kind of shite Theresa May’s era of the Tories used to get up to in that just pre Brexit era, except it had no traction here and made him look like of them.

      There’s definitely a streak of that that runs through FG and that doesn’t sit well with the Irish general public in the way that it does in aspects of middle England.

      He read the room, but it was one nobody else was in.
