The image of the post is Edvard Isto’s 1899 painting *“Hyökkäys“ (The Attack)*. It decipts the Finnish Maiden – symbolizing Finland – getting its law book torn apart by a two-headed eagle that symbolizes Russia. The painting messages the Russification of Finland, which was started that same year by Tsar Alexander III and continued with occasional breaks until 1917; the intention of the process was to mute the Finnish population, strip Finland of its autonomous status and make it equal in status to any regular governorate within the Russian Empire.

It was a bit [calmer in 1906](https://peda.net/kotka/lukiokoulutus/karhulanlukio/opiskelu/oppiaineet/historia/shk/v/sis) calmer in 1906, so the same painting was used as inspiration for postcards
