The US (Trump) put the Dutch in check by using them as a literal bargaining chip. They put in place and withdrew the takeover as soon as Trump finished using them to negotiate with China. This proved that the assets of European allies can be traded around and larger organizations like the EU will do nothing to prevent that. It’s not a win for China, they just realize now that their diversification with the EU is limited.
