Will be interesting to see how this actually plays out beyond all the spin and posturing. There is ample court precedent showing the provinces have the jurisdiction to regulate products, even on FN lands. While there are court-established carve outs for some things like tobacco, there is no such precedent for cannabis sales. Of course, many of the elected leaders in those FN communities will object. That’s politics.

On the other hands, the a lot of the provinces (with some exceptions like the prairies) tend to be pretty timid around enforcing that authority when it comes to cannabis retail because of the politics involved It’s a move that takes political capital.

Plus, it is often a game of whack-a-mole where police raid a place, seize all the product, maybe even make some arrests, and it will be back up and operating in a day or two. So it requires the provinces to expend a bunch of political capital for what is often very little real progress in terms of enforcement.

That said, 131 unlicensed stores in a tiny province like NS is crazy. It should have never been allowed to get that big if NS actually wants to exercise its jurisdictional authority.

    2. Maybe if an ounce of legal weed in this country was not like double an ounce off the res or a MOM there would not be over 100 unlicensed stores… an $80 ounce from the black market still smokes better than a $160 once from a licensed store anyday.  It makes 0 sense to buy legally unless youre ignorant of the other ways to aquire it lmao

It has been federally legal for 7 years already, plenty of time to consult with the nations and work out some sort of revenue sharing agreement. Seems like the province waited this long, refused to consult, made their own law and now it’s an issue of public safety? Now they send a letter to all the chiefs saying shut them down or we’re calling the RCMP. Pretty threatening to people who are just small business owners trying to feed their community / family. These aren’t huge operations, these are mom and pop shops. They have different rights than us and we should respect them.

    4. I use the 510 carts, and here in Ontario, the only bad ones I’ve received have been from Indigenous stores. When the carts aren’t made right, they can be dangerous for your lungs. I still have those 2 nearly full on my drawer because they taste like burning ceramic.

I’ve resolved to only buy flower from them going forward as it doesn’t seem like the quality control is there for more technical products.

People forget that First Nations Land is considered a Sovereign Nation within the Nation, and what they are trying to achieve will blow up in their face. Any Chief allowing RCMP to show up on behalf Nova Scotia’s Government bidding will not go well for them in the future when the election roams around.
