    1. Also, do not forget that the Soviets entered the war on the same side as the Nazis by invading Poland. The Baltic states were taken over by the Soviets very soon afterward.

      Operation compass is clearly a major battlefield defeat for the axis and came first, The east african campaign also came to a close a month after the beginning of the battle of moscow.

      Battle of moscow: roughly 170,000 german casualties for around a million soviet casualties. (taking battle of moscow to be oct 41-jan 42)

      Operation compass: roughly 150,000 italian casualties (inc 130,000 captured) for about 2000 commonwealth casualties. (Dec 40 – Jan 41) Italians lose control of most of libya and most of their army in north africa, forcing germany to intervene.

      East Africa: roughly 270,000 italian casualties (230,000 captured) for around 80,000 allied. (jun 40-nov 41)

      Italy completely loses control of ethiopia, eritrea and somalia.
