Yep very common. Dont trust google reviews.
It’s not that common . . . unless you’re leaving a review for a German restaurant. Then it’s EXTREMELY common.
And it doesn’t take much to get Google to take down the review. They are 100% afraid of facing any actual legal action in a German court over it, so they just capitulate to the restaurant’s demands of removal immediately and without question.
I’m guessing that „but food was underwhelming“ is the part that is „defamatory.“
In the US (and most other countries) this would in no way classify as defamatory, but in Germany; . . . it does. For some reason. Note that courts in Germany wouldn’t find it defamatory, but restaurants do.
edit: You have to word in such a way as to not be a statement of fact. For example, if you had said, „but I personally found the food underwhelming“ it probably wouldn’t have been a problem. Stating „the food was underwhelming,“ while to a rational person is implied opinion, it could be viewed as a statement of fact, and thus defamatory.
Note that I don’t side with the restaurant in this. It’s asinine they’re calling the review defamatory and having it removed.
This is way to common. 4 of my last 5 reviews got deleted with this „cause“.
Shitty restaurants doing shitty stuff.
Very common in Germany. Basically in Germany anytime someone complains that a review is defamation Google will automatically take it down. Google reviews here are horribly inaccurate. Even if you appeal the removal and provide proof to support your review often Google will still take it down.
This is a new thing and one of my reviews was affected as well. They’re pissing their pants and err on the side of rather removing too many of the reported reviews (even if they were okay) than to miss one and maybe get in trouble.
But it speaks for the fact that everyone buys their reviews and stars now. The internet has really gone down the drain, because all that matters anymore are appearances.
I’m told that they have backed down if you produce proof, like a credit card receipt, that you were actually there. do you live in Germany? it would be weird if they went through the trouble of suing a foreigner for defamation.
Yeah, G is doing its best to make everyone aware here in Germany that their public review system isn’t trustworthy.
Almost all people I know who used to give reviews on G stopped doing so, because (their) reviews got taken down, even years after they visited the place and their timeline clearly shows they were at the place.
One time I got scammed by a restaurant. I’ve ordered something and it was never delivered. I was literally robbed of my money. Continued to write a bad review of course. Guess what? Same result. I was so fcking angry at that shit.
I once rated a Subway restaurant with 3 stars and the words: „It was OK“ and received the exact same email….
Yeah for some reason in Germany I keep getting bad reviews rejected. I guess reviewing stuff is only allowed if it’s positive making reviews entirely pointless
This is very common nowadays.
Companies report all reviews with low ratings (and yes, for most 3 stars are „low“) as abuse and defarmation, so google will remove it automatically.
Of course you can try to revoke, but have to prove you have been there once and many other things.
so … just accept it.
if this happens to me, i always go to another review site, like trip advisor or golocal and rate these compatnies the same, but -1 star for that removal-move on google. just to be fair.
