Infrastructure Minister Long: “An arbitrator would likely have sought a middle ground between the two proposals, leaving taxpayers on the hook for hundreds of millions, potentially billions, in additional costs. Albertans elected this government to make responsible choices — not to delegate them.“
Education Minister Nicolaides: the government was faced with an impact “to the tune of billions of billions of dollars” and changes to government classroom management policies. “Those final decisions, I firmly believe, need to be in the hands of elected officials and not independent, unelected arbitrators.“
Funny, they didn’t see the need to overrule the constitutional rights of AUPE members when they felt confident that the arbitration would go their way. That leaves a stark message: public employees can choose between fighting for a fair deal, and having constitutional rights.
It’s worth saying, that the labour movement in Canada wasn’t built on legal strikes and legal labour protections.
Alberta teachers could simply walk off the job, and encourage anyone who plans to cross the picket line to think about their health. Unionized workers across the Province could join them in an “illegal” sympathy strike. This threat is what caused Dougie in Ontario to back down when he tried the same thing to strike break against EAs.
It’s time for a return of the labour militancy that built this country.
