Aussie living in Estonia here. I’m really conflicted about this (and in general when it comes to privacy, rights, etc).
I absolutely despise Chat Control and the push to undermine GDPR. We should have the right to privacy. Yes, bad actors will abuse it, and something needs to be done to stop them, but the vast majority of us aren’t doing anything wrong and just want to be left alone. Just realised that this makes me sound like an American and their gun rights… (I support strict gun control). At the same time, I do think there should be limits on “free speech” when it crosses into inciting hate or violence.
I guess that makes me a bit of a hypocrite, but nothing in life is black or white, it’s all fucking grey…
Social media in general has become incredibly toxic and divisive. Why do billionaires get to tweak algorithms to make sure we only see what they want us to see or shoehorn us into certain tribes (but the same should also go for governments), all the while stealing our data to grow more of their toxic and divisive shit? Kids probably shouldn’t be on it in its current state.
Youth suicide rates in Aus are only going up. Something like a third of all kids 16 and under have reported having suicidal thoughts, and that’s only the reported cases. On a personal note, by the time I was 21, I had already had 3 friends take their own lives.
Social media isn’t the only or possibly even the leading cause, but it is definitely a contributing factor. Something needs to be done, and I guess this is just one small step, and admittedly, there are probably better ways to start tackling this problem.
But as others have already pointed out, bans like this are easy to bypass. Kids aren’t stupid, if they want access, they’ll figure it out. So this will probably end up being about as good as using a plaster on an amputation. It’s a much bigger and deeper problem that needs more than just this ban.
Luckily, my kids are still very young, so I’ve got a few more years before I need to worry about such issues. I just hope we can get our shit together by then.
