Aren’t there already brands that do this?
Isn’t Porsche calling their EVs Turbo? So fake gear shifts aren’t really a stretch.

This is for the kid’s whose siblings gave them a controller than wasn’t plugged in. We all knew it wouldn’t end well!
This is the result of a focus group comprised entirely of rich Boomers. My guess is even after they make this, those Boomers still won’t buy it and the EV drivers who wanted one will be turned off by the „fake“ shifting.
I feel bad for Porsche. They used to be such a great brand.

Just kidding, I love the smoothness of an EV drive, going back to normal car feels like sitting in a tractor.
I bet the service dept will tell you “your virtual transmission needs service” or “it’s broke and we have to replace it.”
Put a clutch in as well. And ashtray would be nice.

I need a fake shifter too. And make it feel like when I drive so it bucks every time I shift. Maybe give me an engine sound and that nice burnt clutch smell.

If i remember correctly, Porsche designers were amazed at the Ioniq 5 N’s driving excitement despite not wanting to touch it at first. I believe they said they want their EVs more like that one.
This looks like a direct result of that.
One of my least favorite things about my Taycan is the actual gearshift when it drops from 2nd to 1st when you stomp on it in normal…
In sport mode it’s very linear and smooth.

Just so I am clear, this is all fake, right? The tach, the sounds? I can see maybe they add more to the regen breaking in the „lower gears“, but does the car also need to be in lower gears when you are going slower?
Cars as anything more than an appliance from moving you from one place to another are over. You can’t make a computer with wheels characterful – nobody loves their laptop.
Genuinely don’t get why everyone hates gear shifts, people go nuts for CRT monitor simulation and other retro technologies all the time and that doesn’t get the same flak as we see in this thread. Is it so bad that some people like having fun with their cars?
Next thing you know they’re building fake manual transmissions with simulated rev matching, stalling, bad shifts and rev hang 😭
Yeah, I’m not really a fan of this fake shit, and the same goes for fake sound effects and fake exhausts. It’s the same energy as slapping an “M” sticker on your BMW 318i.
Just have some faith in the car you built instead of adding overengineered gimmicks no one asked for.
I saw a video of a car that had a real gearbox and electric motor. I think it was an 86. Very cool but so niche.
Why the hell would they do this? Haven’t they been working for decades to try to make the automatic gear shifts in gas vehicles as undetectable as possible?
Sadly, the losers at r/cars cant accept an EV otherwise.
