>Defence industry analysts point out that the leaked document was so confidential that even Saab, the firm that builds the Gripen, had never seen it before. They suggest that individuals inside DND and the Royal Canadian Air Force were behind the leak in an attempt to put further pressure on Carney to choose the F-35
>In April, 2024, the National Post reported that the competition for the new fighter jet was rigged right from the beginning to select the Lockheed Martin F-35.
It’s important to understand that the RCAF pilots, officers, and leadership are incapable of seeing themselves as anything other than America’s wingman:
I think Gripen is going to get the deal. The only 35’s we getting are the ones we already committed to. I see public pressure saying we need Gripen’s

This is not a complicated issue. Either you think we should get the plane that’s objectively and undeniably better in every single way that matters, or you think we should be equipping troops with swords and lances in the age of repeating firearms is good as long as it lets you virtue signal about not liking Americans. That **is** the disagreement here. No exceptions.

“Leaks report” is an interesting way of saying “shows the results from the competition”.
Not that Pugliese’s articles are known for being unbiased.

Unpopular opinion here but I trust the judgement of our airmen and airwomen on which jet would be the best fit for the RCAF. They are the ones with the most experience and work daily in the environments where these jets will be utilized. It sucks that the F-35 is American considering the political climate but we should purchase the jet that is the best fit for our members.

It’s not a purchase. It’s a lease.
The USA owns the parts and the software.
Plus [this article](https://www.lapresse.ca/affaires/2025-12-02/guerre-commerciale/les-droits-de-douane-menacent-de-faire-grimper-la-facture-des-f-35.php) says the USA can’t guarantee we won’t lay tariffs on the F-35 parts which will jack up the bill even more.
Don’t forget that we are being threatened to buy the F-35
