Girls catch up to boys. National disaster. Where were this people where boys were killing themselves in much higher numbers?
They also cite girls starting to face similar pressure for success as possible cofactor.
how come this did not need addressing when boys were dying in much higher numbers?
If you need more proof society cares more about one gender

Although there are many factors, I’d say a whole chunk of this has to do with the “lookism”, particularly being influenced by Kpop and South Korea’s insane “beauty standards”.
These days, the standards for beauty have gotten higher and higher, especially for girls and women. They think they should look like those Kpop idols, even though they’re unrealistic and portrayed under ideal conditions, and pretty much all of them have gotten plastic surgeries. So plastic surgery is getting more normalized than ever, and there are more and more insane skin care rituals. And this is getting even more turbocharged by Instagram, Tik Tok, etc.
Many young girls express insecurities over their looks, and many say they want to have plastic surgeries. Many express having suicidal thoughts over their looks. It doesn’t help that there’s a lot of bullying over their looks from even their own parents and from society at large. It’s quite depressing actually.
South Korea has the highest suicide rate in OECD countries, and it’s no wonder. It has a really toxic culture of being obsessed with looks, that Japan is unfortunately importing.
