There is no legitimate reason for white collar workers to be forced into an office other than propping up corporate landlords, parking conglomerates, gas stations and too many restaurants and coffee shops.

Its an artificial demand economy paid on the backs of the worker in cash and time.

The private sector and public sector seem to be moving in different directions. Private companies seem to have embraced some level of remote work

i’m a big fan of in person working, but 5 days in the office is just an unreasonable inflexability that won’t be honoured in practice and denies a basically free perk

Ontario’s RTO mandate is going absolutely terrible. Very few employees are on board with this, and departments are now needing to spend more money to bring in desks and cubicles and office supplies to accommodate more people. Much of the internet infrastructure is old and outdated, and will need to be upgraded in order to accommodate all these people coming know office.

Space is a huge concern and many departments cannot meet the mandate due to space constraints. People who work entirely remotely out of their homes 3 or 4 hours away are now being required to come into the office, which is almost certainly going to lead to resignations.

The government will only allow continued working from home if an „Alternative Working Arrangement“ contract is signed. Well, as expected, practically every single Ontario government worker has filled and submitted one of these forms, so now the government needs to review thousands of documents in the course of this RTO. The unions are losing their mind at this, challenging the government’s decision to change the workplace setting while union contracts are being negotiated.

In short, it’s a fucking disaster and takes a system that was working very well and makes it complicated and expensive for no reason. This is not an intelligent policy idea and the federal government is completely ignorant in implementing it.
