From Dublin and genuinely don’t understand the appeal of anything beyond a functional four door with good storage in Ireland. Why would you waste money on a cool car where the only place you’ll really be able to drive it is in the rain on the way to Galway very early on a Tuesday morning?!
Unless you’re doing a LOT of intercounty motorway driving (and your destinations are easy-to-access areas) there is absolutely no point. The roads truly are that shit and feel like they were designed for people a third the size of modern humans.
I think that if you’re going to go all out, I’d go for the F350. Steel wheels with A/T tyres and additional security measures would have you ploughing through a hoarde of zombies without spilling your beer.
What’s insane is that the ones I see around Cork (Ford Rangers) are considered ‚compact‘ trucks in the US – and not full-sized like the F-150
The reason they’ve become so popular is that if you’re a tradesman you can register it as a commercial vehicle and save some money, but unlike a van they have backseats so you can still use it day to day and drop the kids to school.

Saw one in my village a couple of years ago with the big wide arches over the back tyres. There was a farmer’s market on. Cars were parked on both sides of the road. A van was coming down the hill while the fella driving the pickup was driving up. If it was a normal car that didn’t have the wide arches, both could have passed. He started raging at the van. Keep these trucks out of Ireland the sense of entitlement out of Ireland too!
There’s a legit reason to have these in some instances – towing horses boxes if you work in the equine Industry, for instance.
Lot of Ford Rangers used that way.
But you also see builders with them… And there’s little reason why they need them AFAIK… Except massaging a fragile male ego.

I drive a Prius. I have had Toyotas for 25 years because they are the most reliable cars going. I picked the Prius because it’s very cheap to run and maintain.
I always laugh when I see how they are portrayed on US tv. Like driving a truck makes you a „real man“. Lol.

There’s loads of pricks driving SUVs. Half of the cars I see on the road are SUVs. Terrible petrol mileage, overly big for no reason, dangerous. Lot’s of people with shallow egos
I do work for a builder with a big American pick up truck, I have to say it’s the worst worst transport ever for a builder, the lad is a one man band and can fit nothing at all in the pick up space, has to pull a trailer around the whole time, even for the most basic of jobs. He refuses to even entertain the notion of getting a van because the truck suits the image he wants his company to portray. Like clients want to see you struggle reversing a trailer into a tiny front garden and take up a huge amount of space on the public road with the truck itself
They’re now more likely to arrive due to the EU somewhat capitulating to Donald Trump btw on car safety rules. There’s less likelihood of them appearing in Ireland as we are right hand drive and also we tax the bejaysus out of their emissions class, but that’s the reality of the trade wars unfortunately.
I worry a lot about how much influence we take from USA culture, for now it’s fine but we should definitely keep an eye on it, and not let it get out of hand
