Another typical case of Russia thinking it can crush an opponent they deem lesser without proper preparation or war plans

This is not a conflict between Finland and the USSR. This is an aggressive attack on Finland.

Conflict?
Soviet Unions imperialistic invasion war of Finland. Words matter a lot.

This is such a weird conflict when you look at how people view the outcome.
Here in Scandinavia the general conssensus is that Finland won the war, but if you ask a Serbian or even American the common wisdom is that they lost.

Alakurtti is marked as „Soviet Union“, though the village/town was Finnish from 1833 until 1940.

Hanko and the panhandle in the North weren’t taken til 1944

The fact that they gave up so little territory, gave so many casualties, and lost so few men themselves while completely retaining independence? Yeah, Finland won the Winter War

this, the growth of Ukraine by taking Polish terrotiory, the deportation of outer manchuria’s koreans, the existance of Moldovia, all because of stalin’s paranoia

Don’t worry just a year after Finland found an anti imperialist ally to fight back against this senseless Russian violence

Lots of reasons. Much better equipment including winter gear. Great defensive advantage used to the fullest.

Wasnt Finland under Russian Empire in far past? Same as Ukraine?
Maybe now that they will get Donbas and Crimea, they can coexist pacefully (history reapeats itself
… same outcome, small land price to keep the country)?

I’m not sure why this difference in losses is presented as something special. The Russians were on the offensive the whole time, and the Finns were on the defensive. In such cases, Attacker losses are around 3 * defender losses as a rule of thumb taught in Western staff colleges for 19th–20th century.
That’s pretty much what we see once we take inaccuracies in record-keeping into account
