SSA-N ist Shan State Army North; SSA-S ist die Shan State Army-South. TNLA ist die Nationale Befreiungsarmee Ta’angs. Der politische Flügel der SSA-N ist die SSPP (Shan State Progress Party); SSA-S ist RCSS (Restaurierungsrat des Shan-Staates).

    1. Convoluted context ahead:

The Shan people call themselves „Tai“ and their languages are related to Thai and the Zhuang language(spoken in China).

Shan State Army North formed as the Shan State Army in 1964; SSPP formed in 1971. They signed a ceasefire in 1989 with the SPDC junta in exchange for autonomy. Shan State Army-South and the RCSS formed in 1996 by former fighters of the drug lord, Khun Sa. They both are considered members of the junta’s ceasefire groups.

Both are not that active in the present phase in the Burmese Civil War; RCSS/SSA-S has [shot at junta troops ](https://www.bnionline.net/en/news/junta-and-militia-launch-joint-attack-rcss-base-mongping-shan-state)and refused to attend government-sponsored „[peace forums](https://www.irrawaddy.com/opinion/guest-column/yet-another-peace-ploy-from-myanmars-junta.html/).“ SSPP/SSA-N were a little bit more conciliatory to the junta.

Both Shan State Armies are against the TNLA, who they view as invading Shan lands. SSA-N and TNLA also received weapons from the UWSA, a Chinese proxy, [until recently](https://cnimyanmar.com/index.php/english-edition/31012-uwsa-meets-with-tnla-sspp-mndaa-announces-it-will-no-longer-supply-weapons).

The last clip shows SSA-N firing at junta troops in Kyaukme Township. Most of it was [retaken by the junta ](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c051m0jn392o)from the TNLA, but the SSA-N control some rural areas.

Right now, the TNLA are handing back the towns of [Mogok and Momeik to the junta after China-sponsored talks.](https://eng.mizzima.com/2025/10/31/27802)

I am not even mentioning the Shanni Nationalities Army who claim to represent the „Tai Laing“ or „Red Shan.“ Despite forming in 2016 to be an anti-military force (along with their commanders being [assassinated by the junta in 2021](https://www.irrawaddy.com/news/burma/ethnic-shanni-military-leader-assassinated-by-junta-group-claims.html)), they are one of the very few pro-junta militias.
