    1. we already knew this, its only a matter of time cause one of the first things to go when the war (THE WAR) starts will be the internet..cause its the new Media of this age..

    2. Well it’s been fun but I think we all knew this internet thing was a phase. I’ll miss the cat videos the most.

Why have global information sharing and scientific collaboration when we can let the political class’s dick measuring contest ruin it for everyone else? /s

This has been a thing since the cables were installed. It’s not news. From shark bites, foreign sabotage, or natural disasters the industry has been very aware.

The most interesting fiber cut is the one back in the early 2000’s when a ATT union worker was pissed and decided to cut the most critical fiber bundles in San Francisco. I forget how long it took to bring everything back up but I have a buddy that ran a data center out there and they were down for a week. Crazy

    5. Once the trans-oceanic internet apocalypse hits, people who have stocked plex servers will be like gods. I’ll be disbursing episodes of the office to people like Immortan Joe in Fury Road.

    6. This is rince and repeat news.
All the alarmist thinking the world will let the internet go down is amazing.

The government does not want you to know the under sea cables are free, you can take them and scrap them. I have 10s of km worth of undersea cables.

Would cause global chaos if anyone did anything to these undersea cables. After a few of them cut, the world would start feeling the impacts

Feel like the backlash from cutting internet would be worse than a bombing, from the perspective of an average citizen

    10. It amazes me this evening makes news anymore. They have been talking about these cables being cut since the first one went down in 1858 and yes that year isn’t a typo.

    11. It’s not always the evil Russians doing it either. [Fishermen are apparently ](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/bell-subsea-fibre-optic-cable-newfoundland-1.7461963)to blame for the cuts between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland earlier this year and back in 2023. I was talking to a guy that works the land side of these issues and he says their cable sometimes get caught by those bottom trawlers and they find it easier to cut the fiber cable than their net. Now, Russia is the likely suspect when this happens in the Baltic sea but sometimes when these fiber lines are cut, it’s just pure corporate greed hoping they don’t get caught.

I just finally got fiber in my neighborhood. Don’t be messing with my internet.

The US would be mostly fine since most of the main websites on the internet are US based and have data centers in the US. Things like reddit would go down in other countries. Because of this, there isn’t really incentive for foreign adversaries to cut these cables

Take it all down. Let’s go back to malls, biking to the vhs rental and arcades.

    15. In an ever-growing connected world, it’s sad to see that we’re in danger of being disconnected, due to malicious actors.

    16. Elon called Bloomberg and asked them to run this because the news came out about China blocking Starlink with drones.

    17. Key-Monk6159 on

The cables are fine but the trouble is Russia and China.

Honestly I not sure if such critical infrastructure can really protected by bad actors.

      > To protect the cables, the US should

The U.S is one of those we will be defending them from

Sometimes I dream of not having internet for a week. Back to 1980. Read what you can forage. Brew your own cassette tapes. Pluck records in the woods. Go to the library and live off the land.

Sabotage of subsea cables is at least a century old, the Brits cut a bunch of German cables at the outbreak of WW I.

    21. MotherFunker1734 on

Elon Musk could sabotage these cables to push the world towards Starlink… And he has the money for it.

Just think about that for a minute.
