    1. Honestly, I think they should follow the Australian model fully and outright ban it until 16.

A lot of adults still don’t appreciate how incredibly damaging social media really is. If parents are able to allow it, most will just do it because they get pestered, don’t want their child being left out, think it’ll be nice to share things with them online, or just think the ban is an overreaction.

    2. Social media, like anything else really, is a tool.

It’s how you use it. I think the proper education on how it is generally used correctly and incorrectly would be a better approach.

Similar to how we can let teenagers cook, but it’s important to educate them on kitchen safety (e.g. use of knives, etc.).

We only talk about social media radicalisation when it comes to kids. What about Elon Musk? JK Rowling? Your uncle who is suddenly interested in the race of The Little Mermaid?

Complete lock down of the internet and ai parsing every word and move for disthought against the oligarchs and their pet politicians.

Stop this and chat control, or become the bitch of tech overlords, (to a greater indeed total degree.)

    5. Maybe just make it easier for parents to install parental controls, that work and aren’t easily bypassed, that block or limit social media access for their kids.

Translation ,everyone will have to provide a digital id to use social media, welcome to „free“ and „civilized“ dystopia eu folks xd

    7. So glad governments are finally waking up to the damage social media is doing.

European parliament calls for global internet surveillance tool that won’t actually protect kids

Just ban phones and phone plans to anyone under 18 and treat phones and phone plans like alcohol and tobacco.

Seriously they need stop making this more difficult then it needs to be.

    10. It’s a trap. If you have to proof that you are older than 16, it means that you have to identify yourself. It’s chat control through the back-door. It’s the end of privacy and a risk to free speech.

If they ban 16 under from using, and most of us 30 and over are deleting it/ barely using it, that kinda leaves the big tech companies a bit dry on users. I don’t see it happening for monetary reasons. FB ain’t gonna survive on 65 year old people posting „good morning“ pictures.

    12. This is a step in the right direction. I feel.it should go up to 18, just my opinion.

It’s fascinating how many people on reddit are vehemently anti-social media and how many of them have appeared in the comments here. It’s the height of hypocrisy.

When people say ‚Reddit has changed‘, I think the biggest change here is how little people seem to care for personal freedoms nowadays. How is it that some commentors are being upvoted after unironically arguing that an under-16 ban isn’t enough and that a population wide ban would actually be better?

    14. let me guess. everyone now has to upload all of their biometric data, a poop sample and must agree to be tracked 24h via a palantir drone that follows you everywhere to prove they’re old enough

edit: and the drone shoots you if you talk about israel

I have a better solution. Ban social media from existence and let everyone to grow the idea of building their own social platforms, limited to their own reach, instead of relying on a brainwashing monopoly getting you in touch with undesirable strangers or bots selling you shit that you don’t need.

That’s just going to lead to a bunch of children realizing just how fucking stupid adults are.

Social media should be banned for everyone around the time that children learn that santa claus isn’t real.
