Who knew when you mix mass immigration through asylum seekers and displaced refugees and a devastating housing crisis…that you won’t have anywhere to put them once they leave direct provision…

A stain on our nations history, we should be moving heaven and earth to house these people
This has been known for ages but not made a big deal of because it didn’t suit anyone’s interest to draw attention to it:
1) The government don’t want to say it because it makes it sound like they are downplaying homelessness and they know that topic is their greatest political weakness
2) The opposition don’t want to say it because (and this is not a nice reflection on the general public) the electorate will not care as much about their winning issue, if they think half the housing list is non-Irish.
3) Pundits and commentators don’t want to talk about it because with neither government nor opposition want to make any hay out of it, it will only result in shrugging of shoulders at best and being accused of being racist at worst.
I’m sure no one is making money from this, in no way are people getting paid for all this stuff, no never.
It’s almost as if the issue of there being too many people and not enough housing is made a hell of a lot worse by importing more people.

Bad immigration policy is creating racism in Ireland. It is time to hold to account our elected officials and the landlord class instead of those desperate for asylum. If you cannot care for the population already here we must address the issues first before taking in more people in need.
Many people make money housing these individuals. It is not the charities of our past that are benefitting from funding. Corruption in politics is nothing new but this should be a wake up call. I argued for open borders for many years till my family were impacted by lack of housing and hospital beds. These people are not our enemy but not are we the only nation that should bear the brunt of the burden of care. The EU seems to t think Ireland has an endless capacity for people despite the housing and affordability crisis.
I hope people wake up and vote for their needs and not their ideologies.
I mean, it makes sense. As an immigrant, I don’t have anything to fall back on if I become homeless. I don’t have the same support network Irish born people have. Surely this would be expected?
This is the case in most strong economies, especially if accommodation is scarce. Newcomers struggle to compete with locals for a slew of reasons. Their savings are worth less (because at home they’ve been making less), landlords prefer locals, and there may be language and systemic difficulties.
The Irish have been over-represented in London’s homeless since WW2. It’s nothing new.
Presumably, this will have zero impact on the coming-over-here-taking-our-houses lot, but hey, it’s not as if they’re interested in nuance. Or even data.
I would at this point love for us to be able to have a reasonable national debate on immigration, without racism, xenophobia or fear mongering. Put all options on the table and let’s talk about them in a civilised manner.
Personally I’m not convinced of all the merits of the Danish system, but I think it has some things we might learn from and implement here. It would certainly cut asylum numbers and take the wind out of the sails of the patriot muppets if that was agreed on as a goal by all govt and left wing opposition parties like the Soc Dems and SF.
Just like the Irish used to be over-represented in London homeless statistics. That’s what the Pogues‘ Old Main Drag is about.
I said this a long time ago, When refugees come to live in Ireland, they’re not really going to be buying houses, it’s onto the council housing list that they will go, you have people then in well off areas with their own homes saying everyone is welcome while they don’t have to compete for that social housing.
I’ve no problems with people arriving in genuine cases, but there needs to be limits on people coming here under false pretences just to live off the state.
