I haven’t used Jelly yet, but I see a lot of hate towards Plex from Reddit. In my experience using it to host media that I access primarily from my Xbox devices and computers at home it is pretty great. I do stream a show every once in a while, but the commercial breaks are a little too frequent for my tastes.
They may go the full path of enshitification, but for now their need to become profitable is understandable and the moves they have made aren’t what I would consider anti-consumer. I’m less impacted by the changes than some, because I only allow media access to my local network and therefore haven’t spent a penny.

Kinda funny charging people to stream the media they pirated.

This is the only reason people use Plex 😂

I switched to Jellyfin when news of the remote streaming soon being disabled broke. Jellyfin has come quite a ways. Not as user friendly as Plex in my opinion but it works well enough. Definitely seems to be more picky about how you name your media than plex is though. Took me a while to figure out the naming convention.

I consider myself pretty tech-savvy but after many times trying to dive into the subs on 🏴☠️ and setting up Plex or Jellyfin, I still have no place to start.
Does anyone have any steps I can follow to cut out all these streaming services? Is there any solution like Kodi that has all the recent shows/movies/and live TV?
marvinfuture on
Can’t you just VPN to the server and bypass this? Seems like it’s only for remote traffic?
samurai77 on
Plex sucks anyway, Jellyfin for the win!
orphenshadow on
The link is broken for me, whats the TLDR? No remote streaming without plex pass? I thought it was already a requirement to have plex pass to stream remotely. Are they now requiring both accounts to have plex pass or something?

Ditched plex for jellyfin months ago. Couldn’t be happier.

I feel like this is a bit of a non issue, as all the serious plex users I know already have a plex pass for hardware transcoding / into & credits skipping / etc…
You’re probably not sharing your collection much without hardware transcoding.

Plex should crackdown on that update that ruined all usability of their app
ContextMaterial7036 on
Got the lifetime pass before they raised the prices, well worth it.
Teied Jellyfin, but found the UI hard to navigate and the way titles and images are laid out it’s hard to locate the specific media I’m looking for in a list of titles.
Surprised it took this long tbh… They incur costs anytime someone remotely streams the media.

Switched to Jellyfin a long time ago. Plex is bloated with unnecessary trash they get paid to shove on my screen. They also have had their data breached multiple times. Easiest switch ever.

Important note: users only need a remote streaming pass if either they or the server owner don’t have Plex Pass.
If you use a friend’s server but have Plex Pass, you’re good.
If your friend has Plex Pass on the account that manages the server, you’re good.

Wait, does this mean Plex is going to boot me? My brother-in-law is the tech guy in our family and set up a server that we all have access to, even though we live in different parts of the country. We each use our own email addresses to log in

I’ve been fine with jellyfin only thing that annoys me it fetches metatata from some crappy websites that can be inaccurate so I have to manually do it. I was wondering why many episodes of a show were labeled wrong and it was because tvdb or whatever went by broadcast order

While I can appreciate not everyone can or wants to buy the plex pass, this is ideal timing from them to lineup with their sale.

Tailscale works wonders if you’re technologically savvy. I have it on all my family’s iOS devices and it just works if you turn it on before opening the plex app.

If you don’t have lifetime Plex pass, you’re just doing it wrong.
Of course, I say that as a guy who paid $79 for lifetime about 15 years ago.
If I didn’t have kid accounts and a few for extended family members and friends, I’d probably use Jellyfin.

Jellyfin works well for me, I stream to our TV, 3 desktops a laptop and our android phones, sure a bit more set up than plex but it just works, I’m not a jellyfin guru by any means. Currently using my PC as the sever but have a decent one that’s getting hard drive upgrades to take over.

Kind of a bummer since I’ve been running the plex and letting other people watch from it.
Not sure why it costs plex anything to do it, it’s all my bandwidth, my storage, whatever. I pay for the lifetime plex pass, but it sure sounds like my friends will have to pay for it too now?
I’d switch, but I’ve got the lifetime pass. Maybe I could set up a secondary stream-only service for everyone else and run them simultaneously but that sounds like it might be painful on the server. Oh well

I mean. I assume a self-hosted VPN on a home firewall or router would bypass this right? That way you could stream anywhere and be on your LAN.

Been running plex for over a decade without the pass and has worked absolutely flawless for me the entire time. I use it every single day. I bought the pass months ago when they announced that remote streaming will require it. More than happy to support a company I’ve been using for a decade for free. I hope it sticks around for many more years to come.

Seems a bit odd for a service that is almost exclusively used for watching pirated content thinking they can nickel and dime their userbase when theres alternatives that are better than them lol
