I have much respect and admiration for China, but I have to say all of this is very unsurprising considering how terrible their foreign policy appeared to the rest of Asia. They could have easily adopted a more cooperative and magnanimous stance and gain much approval from their neighbors, very, very easily. Right now when countries around the world are losing faith in the dollar and losing trust in the US government’s debts, this is a perfect chance to appear as a much more lenient and fair partner in finance and such..
