I get that it’s bit of fun and pageantry but it’s just another case of having to say “X… the thing that was called Twitter.” Or “The Allianz, you know… Twickenham stadium.”
It’s going to be called the Sutton Hoo boat forever because people will have to add this clarifier after they call it whatever it gets named.
The irony is that when RRS Sir David Attenborough arrived in Plymouth the other day, no one gave a damn until they realised it was THE Boaty McBoatface. Suddenly everyone wanted to see it!
I completely agree. Boaty McBoatface is a silly name for a Saxon ship – Mc implies a Scottish clash.
Boaty Boatfacesson is a proper Anglo Saxon name.
They might as well just skip the contest and call it Boaty McBoatface.

As soon as I first heard about this competition, the word ‚Shippy McShipface‘ immediately went into my head and this lady’s helpful suggestion isn’t helping take it back out again.
Tbf, the Boaty McBoatface joke got piledrived squarely into the ground when everyone started doing it, then the companies themselves got involved doing it.

Repeating variations of a joke many many times just makes it not funny any more. But that won’t stop people.
Just name one boaty mcboatface and then it can’t be used again. The people want what the people want!
I named it Æthelred, because it’s clearly unready to go to sea.
