Microsoft Surface keyboards covered with Alcantara and polymers are an example of a poor design choice due to their durability and cleaning issues, which result in thousands upon thousands of non-recyclable, worn-out keyboards entering landfills each year.
Yeah, it makes for a nice trim material, but there’s a reason only cars that don’t get driven often have Alcantara steering wheels. It looks like shit about .5 seconds after coming into contact with human hands.
How dirty are their hands?! I’ve had my Surface Laptop for about 3 years and it is pristine. Wash your hands after eating Cheetos and you should be good
Who was that weirdo who used to work at Microsoft that was selling these like some premium experience, – he always dressed like a cross between mafia and a used car salesman.. – it was the guy who was practically in tears announcing Windows 11 as being some existential panacea for his mom. My last company gave us one of these as our primary machine a few years ago. What a piece of shit.
Mine is separating quite a bit now. Been thinking about just sandwiching the edges between some gorilla tape, lol.

To be fair, planned obsolescence was supposed to keep you from discovering this.
I care less about the finish and more about the fact that some update or another bricked mine. Seriously had to pay extra for it as the surface doesnt come with a cover. And I generally liked it for the pen charging dock embedded, but now it’s useless. And apparently its a known issue that M$FT could not give a shit about.
I’m still rocking the Surface Pro 4 as my daily computer, but the keyboard crapped out on me years ago. The flimsy bit of plastic covering the connectors came loose off keyboard which prevented the connectors from making proper contact with the Surface. The Alcantara started looking like absolute shit maybe a month in. All kinds of tearing in the corners. The perimeter fabric lifting. Terrible product.
Shout out to Apple and their finewoven iPhone cases too.
I’m still using one, but you gotta be the type who doesn’t mind the product looking filthy within a month of buying it.
I’m just not sure that’s what most customers are about.
What about the Surface 2 touchpads that went all janky the moment you plugged the USB-C charger in? How did that get through QA? Literally unusable whilst charging.
