I’m stunned that the Liberals under Carney didn’t take the easy win and kill this performative and ineffective program. It is costly, and it targets almost entirely weapons that are shown to have no statistical representation in Canadian crime.
You want to do something meaningful? Tackle gang culture and urban gun violence. Tackle the flow of illegal firearms coming from the US, often through border straddling native reserves. Actually reform our Justice system to punish those who abuse these weapons.

Kick this man off this planet. I refuse to believe this is real. I am baffled by this logic. I am not a gun owner. I had some thoughts of it but I don’t really have a need for one.
I voted for Carney and this is probably my biggest issue with him and his cabinet so far. Shut this down, save the 1BN and move on.

If somebody has a legal gun and doesn’t want it any more, for whatever reason they might have, they should be able to get rid of it as easily as possible and get some fair compensation for whatever their firearms are worth. As long as the buy-back program doesn’t create an arbitrage, there is no harm to anybody. Make it as easy and safe as possible for people who legally own guns to get rid of them if they no longer want their guns.
Imagine a scenario where a legal, responsible gun owner recognizes that their mental health is starting to deteriorate. Why wouldn’t you want a program like this to be available to them?

The issue is what they classify as an “assault styled weapon”. It’s so vague that almost anything can fall under their description of it. They make it seem like it’s optional but it literally isnt. It specifically targets people who commit almost none of the gun-violence in Canada, and does nothing to target the actual gun violence. It’s just virtue signalling at its finest.

They can already give up their guns in cases like this.
