Japan has acted fully within international law in acknowledging that a PLA attack on Taiwan would create a survival-threatening scenario under its security framework. China responded not with diplomacy but with coercion: a Chinese consul issued a violent threat to behead Japan’s prime minister, state-aligned platforms amplified nuclear rhetoric toward Japan, and Beijing filed a misleading U.N. complaint portraying Japan’s legal statements as “armed intervention.” These actions violate diplomatic norms and reflect a broader pattern of authoritarian pressure, disinformation, and regional destabilization. Given China’s escalating militarization and support for North Korea’s missile program, Japan’s reassessment of its nuclear principles is a rational and lawful response. The international community must recognize that Japan is exercising self-defense, while China is attempting to rewrite reality and intimidate a peaceful neighbor.
