What war did the US pay that much for on Canada’s behalf?
The only war affecting both was Canada dying on America’s behalf.
The senator is under the false impression that the budget commitment to defense is paid to the U.S. or somehow owed to American contractors. NATO is not a protection racket run by the U.S. It’s time for this guy to get an education.

This is misleading to the point of being outright lies. The US actually spends more per capita tax dollars on health care than Canada does despite not having universal health care. This is because their health care system has become so inflated and profit driven as a result of pure capitalism that the government ends up spending more on things like Medicare access for people who can’t afford it than Canada does just giving everyone universal access. It’s the epitome of pants on head idiocy, and the fact that these GOP senators keep parroting this garbage makes them broken beyond repair.
The entire world paid for the US miltary plus profit.

Us miltary is the most advanced in the world because brains follow money, theres a cost to get that back but its kinda looking like Canada and the EU are willing to pay to take some of that back .
The recent comments and royal visit by the Swedes showed , just because the EU folded , dosnt mean they forgot .

Nobody forced the US to engage in their war on terror … or many of their other wars. Nobody forced them to not tax billionaires or companies. They did that all on their own for their own supposed benefit.
They were the „world police“ because it benefitted them. Not us. It allowed them to become the world’s default currency that that allowed them to spread US influence throughout the entire world. It allowed them to fall into debt without the crushing consequences other nations would have faced.
Now they’re pretending the entire world used them, as if they were running a charity or something. Gimme a break. Being hegemon ain’t gonna come cheap. Not our fault that you ripped off your own people. And continue to do so.
How about taxing Elon Musk instead of giving the world’s richest man endless amounts of money? Going after the ultra wealthy? Not even massively, just quit giving them breaks and taxing them? Oh, you don’t want to do that? Just want to complain that other countries don’t want to be the world police along with you, as if every US mission is a NATO mission so you can adventure in the middle east? Yeah, sure.

Has shown me that a huge swath of American politicians are just regular old dummies in positions of power who don’t understand how anything outside their own border actually works. Or that they do and don’t care, and are content to just simply lie about literally everything.

They are making a baseline in popular opinion to justify hostility towards Canada. They want a narrative where Canadian are the bad guys.

I looked it up for a discussion elsewhere. The current 2% target was committed in 2014 for achievement by 2024. Canada is one year late. We’ll make that up in a few years as we continue towards 5%. Tillis can go pound sand.
The conversation is actually quite interesting and there were many different pinions were shared as several senators were in attendance.

I take his logic to be that because canada had a shortfall on defense spending the US had to make it up. This has resulted in the ‚inability‘ of tbe US to provide healthcare to its people.

At no time has the US been required to make up any shortfall. Theres no agreement, etc. The US pursues its own foreign policy. And a purpose of tvat is to expand its industrial and commetcial presence around the world.
They have chosen to funnel money to wealthy corporations instead of raise the living standard of their citizens.
His comments and position are ironic given the fact that the zuS directly funds Israel – a country with a vastly superior social support infrastructure than the US.
Those are actual US dollars going to israel versus his made up dollars going to Canada.

Yet more evidence that the anti-Canada rhetoric extends beyond Trump. It’s not going away once he dies. We’re a convenient boogeyman, especially when they’re feeling placated about having rounded up a sufficiently cruel number of Mexicans (anyone who looks different). This hostility should be taken into account by defence planners but the CF senior officers seem to still be drinking the Kool-aid.

It’s true that European and Canadian welfare states have been subsidized by the American military spending. The US spends disproportionately on defence, military bases, blue water navy, nuclear stockpiles. And Canadas spending as % of GDP has been way too low, especially in a world where we can’t rely on the US defence umbrella.
But this spending wasn’t some magnanimous gift. It was a bribe (and sometimes a threat) to establish and maintain post-war American hegemony and dollar dominance.
This victim attitude you constantly see from the Trump admin, that the poor US has been taken advantage of by the world, is pathetic and makes a joke out of the many ways “American exceptionalism” was actually real for much of the 20th century.
US politicians have no clue on how to fix their broken country. They are so desperate in trying to stay relevant that they start attacking anything „foreign“ and hopes that Americans will „Blame Canada!“ (Like the famous song of South Park).
