Ugh. I don’t think I can help underwrite Zuck’s daily commute from Hawaii anymore.

We need the equivalent of the Surgeon General’s report on tobacco for social media and start to shut it down.

I was like 15 or 16 back in 99-00 talking to grown people on MSN Communities and Yahoo Groups. These adults had professional jobs… including in the public sector.

If Tech and the Federal government wanted to make the nasty chats extremely limited they would have done so. Corporations and attorneys $$$ keep winning and I definitely chose the wrong career paths.

    4. It reminds me of another case where the companies „knew all along“. They ended up laying a lot. But this time I think they’ll get out of it with a slight slap on the wrist and the obligation to promess to not do it again.

I can see why they’d be cautious of their own positive detections, after the recent large ban waves with high levels of false positives. The appeal system is often nonfunctional, and the most effective way to appeal is a legal threat (legal companies offer services specifically for this).

You can see the issue in r/Instagram, with tons of people being falsely banned for CSAM and related reasons.

Which makes me wonder if these higher strike thresholds in the article are because they know their detection tools don’t work very well.

    6. The “report comment” button is pretty revealing in what behavior they’ll protect and what they’ll shut down.

It sounds almost like what would happen if they laid off their entire content moderation and platform safety teams! Oh wait.
