How about a better battery. I’d buy one. I’m sure lots of other people would too. Invest some of that sweet infinite money into a solid state battery that lasts much longer. You know, actually innovate..

I fixed your sales. No need to thank me.

    2. Bring back the mini. I don’t care that it’s thin. I care that it no longer fits in my hand or my pocket.

not too surprising. anyone who uses a protective case is not going to be too concerned about thickness.

Imo, a device is only as thin as its thickest point. I can’t figure out what the USP is for this over its thicker siblings.

    5. I just want one that I can chuck around like an old Nokia. Nothing else I carry daily is this fragile.

At 5.6 mm it is 2mm thinner than others.

What real advantage is that? It has a novelty value, but that is all.

    7. May have had potential without the fucking bulging camera island.

As it is, it’s pointless because even the imaginary usecases for a thin phone would need the *entire* phone to be thin.

    8. If it had a silicon carbide battery and a second telephoto lens I’d be all in. I stuck with it from launch day until a week or so ago and the shortcomings were too much to ignore for a gen 1 product.

Held one at a Best Buy the other day. Pretty cool, but not worth the trade off of more money and an inferior battery

Apple screwed up BIG TIME releasing this the same year they actually bothered to really improve their base model for the first time in like 6 years.

Even if it’s a stepping stone for a foldable down the line it just seems like a waste

    10. Apple really missed the mark promoting the thinness of the device instead of its weight. The weight is why I notice every single time I picked it up

    11. Phones have been thin enough to not care for years, I’m not really sure who’s shopping for a new phone and has thickness as a criteria, people use cases anyways. The marketing makes people think it’s going to bend.

I actually ended up purchasing the Air, and I thoroughly enjoy it. I believe the primary reason why people are hesitant to buy it is due to the absence of a wide-angle camera. It was the sole factor that made me hesitant. However, the battery is small, yet significantly better to the 13 Pro that I previously owned. After having it for a week, I would highly recommend it to almost anyone.

    13. It’s not the battery holding it back.

It’s the single speaker and camera. People will buy a “designer” phone with shorter battery life if it does everything the Pro does.

At no point have I been like “why is my iPhone so fucking fat…… lose ten pounds immediately or get out of my face”

    15. Anecdotally wife loves hers so much I was thinking about getting it instead of the pro max.

I don’t care how thin the phone is, just make it all *the same thickness* so it lays flat when I set it down. You can even fill up all that extra space with a bigger battery…

    17. Does everyone commenting actually have financial times subscription or did nobody try to read the article

Customers: we don’t care about thinness. Give us better battery life.

Apple: okay, here’s the iPhone 17 that’s got an extra beefy battery. ORRR how about this thin-ish phone that’s is more expensive and also has a huge camera bump.

Customers: we’ll take the thicker version thanks!

      Apple: surprised pikachu.

      I don’t want skinny.

I want a phone that fits in my hand like an iPhone 12 mini or iPhone 13 mini.

But the mini phones didn’t sell well enough. Sad.

Best phone they have ever made. Incredible. Durable. Perfect. Don’t listen to the naysayers. Oh but camera and speakers… bad battery. Mhmmm sure

    21. The phone being that thin with a camera then sticking out is completely pointless. Give me a phone that is the same thickness throughout – including where the camera is – and fill any excess space with battery.

    22. Obvious_Scratch9781 on

Who wanted this phone? Everyone I ask is like give me better battery life. Not thinner. Until the next revolutionary feature comes out, just make it better than stripping things away.

    23. Alternate headline: Apple experiences disappointing sales for phone nobody asked for.

People always say they want more battery life and the camera are always expected to get better every year so why put out a phone that is worse in both counts while still charging a massive premium for it?

    24. IamCaptainHandsome on

Going the wrong way, people want chunkier phones again with more battery life.
